Boulder Druid Endgame Guide

Season 6 - Season of HatredEndgame

Last Updated:October 7, 2024|Change Log|FAQ

Welcome to the Boulder Druid Endgame Guide for Diablo 4! This build focuses on using the Dolmen Stone to empower our Boulder skill to orbit around you while Hurricane is active. Dolmen Stone also increases for each damage for each Boulder up to a Maximum of 10 Boulders. With Mjölnic Ryng, we solve our Spirit problems, allowing us maintain 10 Boulders at all times. Due to the stringent minimum gear requirements, Leveling to 60 is not advised with this build.

Without Dolmen Stone, enough Nature Cooldown reduction and/or Ranks to Endless Tempest on Mjölnic Ryng, the final version of the build will not function properly. It is important to have 100% uptime on Hurricane and Cataclysm, so Hurricane Duration and Hurricane/Cataclysm Cooldown Reduction Tempers will help you achieve that. As you progress and get better items the additional Tempering and Masteringworking will not be necessary.

Once you have obtained Vasily's Prayer, you graduate from Earthen Might to Key Passives like Bestial Rampage for Damage and Attack Speed or Ursine Strength for more Overpower Damage and Life.

Requirements for this build

Season Theme

Season 6 - Season of Hatred
Boulder Druid

Season 6 is the Season of Hatred Rising. It features the Zakarum Remnants faction which hunts Realmwalkers, massive behemoths that roam outdoor zones and beckon Mephisto's hellspawn. Participate in these zone events and take down the Realmwalkers to spawn a portal to a Seething Realm. There you can acquire Seething Opals, new consumables that stack with Elixirs for a XP buff and the chance to gather extra rewards when defeating enemies. The types of Opals are:

  • Seething Opal of Equipment
  • Seething Opal of Gold
  • Seething Opal of Materials
  • Seething Opal of Torment
  • Seething Opal of Socketables

Use these Opals at all times to earn reputation with the Zakarum Remnants faction and unlock further rewards.

Skills & Gameplay

Season 6 - Season of Hatred
Boulder Druid
  • Boulder is a Wrath Skill summoning powerful Earth Boulders that knock back enemies and deal massive AoE damage. With Metamorphic Stone Aspect, Boulder becomes a Core Skill and does even more damage, scaling with the number of boulders you have in play. Aim to keep 10 boulders active at once, taking advantage of the weapon temper that allows you to cast Boulder twice with a single cast, making it easier to maintain maximum boulder uptime.
  • Wind Shear serves as your early-game ranged Spirit generator and provides temporary movement speed.
  • Shred replaces your Basic attack once you have 100% uptime on Cataclysm. Use Shred in between Boulder casts to stick to enemies, ensuring constant damage and mobility.
  • Rabies allows us to reliably and quickly spread Poison to mobs, which is useful for activating Envenom and Heightened Malice.
  • Cyclone Armor provides us with Non-Physical Resistance. Its active Knocks Back enemies but isn't necessary because of Boulder's Knock Back.
  • Hurricane provides passive AoE damage and damage reduction and is necessary in order for Boulder to orbit around you.
  • Cataclysm is your ultimate ability, dealing massive damage and enabling infinite Spirit generation and Vulnerable with Mjölnic Ryng when activated.

Skill Rotation

  • Start by using Hurricane to activate your AoE damage and prepare for the fight.
  • Follow up with Cataclysm to maximize damage output and benefit from the infinite Spirit generation and Vulnerable with Mjölnic Ryng.
  • Begin using Boulder to knock back enemies and control the battlefield, stacking up to 10 Boulder at once. Thanks to your weapon temper, you won’t need to cast it 10 times to reach full potential.
  • Use Shred to Poison with Toxic Claws and stick to enemies as your Boulder knocks them around, keeping up the pressure and dealing consistent damage.
  • Use Rabies to reliably and quickly spread Poison to mobs.
  • Alternatively if you don't have 100% uptime of Cataclysm yet, it may be better to take Wind Shear, or Claw if you have Vasily's Prayer for back up Spirit Generation.
  • Alternate between casting Boulder in Werebear form and Shred/Claw in Werewolf form to maintain all your Shapeshifting bonuses.

Druid Specialization

Druids can choose 5 out of 16 Passive bonuses (Boons) from 4 different spirits. You have to bond with one of the Spirits in Túr Dúlra to activate two of its Boons. The remaining Spirits can only have one Boon each. Use the following Boons:

Deer Spirit: Wariness
Eagle Spirit: Avian Wrath
Wolf Spirit: Calamity
Snake Spirit: Obsidian Slam

Bond with the Eagle Spirit and activate Iron Feather

Paragon & Glyphs

Season 6 - Season of Hatred

!
Important

Carefully check your Paragon Boards to ensure correct board rotation. Glyphs go from a radius of 3 to 4 at level 15 and from 4 to 5 at level 46. Some of them cannot be activated before reaching these thresholds! Progress through The Pit to rank up your Glyphs.

Use the slider to see the progression steps. At around Paragon 200, leveling slows down significantly and all important Rare clusters, Legendary nodes and Glyph sockets should be unlocked. Afterwards, you can min/max your build with minor tweaks and by picking up additional smaller nodes.

Tip

Some Glyph position swaps, board changes and other pathing adjustments may occur as you unlock your full potential. The setup displayed by default is the final version of the build before spending additional points that do not significantly impact your character's power.

To Level 15

  1. Dominate
  2. Fang and Claw
  3. Earth and Sky
  4. Spirit
  5. Outmatch

To Level 46

  1. Spirit
  2. Fang and Claw
  3. Outmatch
  4. Dominate
  5. Earth and Sky

There are a total of 328 Paragon Points. After reaching level 60, you gain up to 300 Paragon Levels, 24 from Renown and 4 from Altars of Lilith. Check out our dedicated in-depth guides to learn more about Paragon Boards and Glyphs.

Runes

Season 6 - Season of Hatred
Boulder Druid

You can have up to two Runewords in your setup, each consisting of one Ritual and one Invocation Rune. Socket them in Two-Handed Weapons if your build calls for them, otherwise place them into your Armor pieces to replace normal gems. The Boulder Druid focuses on the following combos:

Best in Slot

  • Tam + Lac - Challenging Shout is extremely helpful as it applies massive 40% Damage Reduction to enemies and Taunts enemies to come to you so you can use Boulder more often instead of wasting actions chasing the enemies.
  • Xol + Que - if you invest 2 Skill Points to reach Enhanced Earthen Bulwark then you will have Unstoppable and a huge Barrier without the need for Earthen Bulwark on your Skill Bar.

Alternative choices

If you haven't unlocked the final setup or found the top runes, you can also benefit from these options:

  • Jah - This replaces Evade with Teleport granting greater travel distance and Unstoppable to break free from Crowd Control.
  • Mot - Dark Shroud is a strong and affordable defensive option.
  • Gar - To reach 100% crit more reliably early on.
  • Wat - Decrepify helps with stagger, defense and allows an execute at 10% HP, can be combined with Xol in your other Runeword to generate large amounts of offering.
  • Yom - Petrify grants Spirit when activated and with the Ursine Strength version we invest 2 points to reach Prime Petrify so the Critical Damage Multiplier is applied with each activation without being on the Skill Bar.

Mercenaries

Season 6 - Season of Hatred
Boulder Druid

Mercenaries are unlocked during the Vessel of Hatred campaign and assist you in battle. There are 4 separate Mercenaries to choose from, each with their own skill trees and abilities. You can have one hired (permanent) mercenary during solo play and a reinforcement who assists you from time to time in certain situations.

  • Hired: Varyana

Attack Speed, Attack Speed, and more Attack speed! These stacking bonuses will help us move faster with Shred and ramp up our Boulder more quickly.

  • Reinforcement: Raheir

Raheir's Bastion is a great escape valve from high pressure situations.

  • 100% Uptime for Cataclysm
  • 100%+ Critical Strike Chance (including Earth)

Item Progression Goals

Before you dive into the Endgame with the Boulder Druid, take a look at this overview of the items used in the build. See below for further details about the different progression steps and variants. Some of your Skill Tree choices depend on what Legendary Aspects and Unique items are available to you. Keep in mind that while we can guarantee that everyone has access to the same Codex of Power Aspects, the exact progression is different for everyone.

Build Variants

Season 6 - Season of Hatred
Boulder Druid

This section is designed to guide your Boulder Druid from a fresh level 60 into the very late endgame using the three variants Starter, Ancestral and Mythic. At the final step, you should be fully decked out with a great all-rounder build. From there, follow the other min/max variants if you want to optimize around certain activities such as Pit Pushing, Speedfarming and more.

Pit Pushing
Mythic Ursine

If you are fresh in Torment 1 coming from a leveling guide, this is where you begin. Since only some Aspects can be guaranteed from Dungeon unlocks for the Codex of Power, focus on acquiring the additional aspects via gambling with Murmuring Obols.

Gear & Skills

Starter Boulder Druid Gear
Starter Boulder Druid Skills
  • Early on in your progression, focus on Armor & Resistances to survive. Each Torment difficulty adds a penalty of -250 Armor and -25% all Res and it's recommended to keep both capped (1000 Armor, 70+ Res) at all times. As you unlock higher power gear, masterworking levels and more Paragon points, you naturally scale your character into the higher difficulties and can start replacing some of these rolls with offensive or utility stats.
  • In this Starter variant be sure to use Juggernaut's or Disobedience to cap out armor.
  • Also, work toward obtaining Vasily's Prayer from Grigoire and Wildheart Hunger from Zir. These items will allow you to switch your key passive to Bestial Rampage, granting powerful Shapeshifting bonuses and enhancing your overall damage and survivability.

The goal here is to progress through the Torment difficulties as you unlock Ancestrals, Paragon points, all Legendary Aspects, Temper mods and the most important Uniques to pilot this build. Some Legendary Aspects are used temporarily to fill slots that may be replaced with more Unique items later on.

Gear & Skills

Ancestral Boulder Druid Gear
Ancestral Boulder Druid Skills
  • As you upgrade your gear to Ancestrals with more masterworking levels and reach higher paragon, you can focus more and more on replacing Armor & Resistance rolls with better stats, but ensure to stay capped at 1000 Armor and 70%+ Resistances for the difficulty you're currently in.
  • At this point you should have 100% uptime on Hurricane and Cataclysm through Tempers and Masterworking Nature Magic Cooldown on Dolmen Stone.
  • From the time you reach Earthen Devastation in your Paragon Board, be mindful of your Damage to Crowd Controlled Enemies bonus. The target for this stat is 250%, and your personal value will depend on the nodes taken on this board, your Offensive Tempers, and the level of your Fang and Claw glyph. Over time, you'll be able to exchange Offensive tempers from Damage to Crowd Controlled Enemies to Earth Critical Strike Chance.
  • Once you've acquired the Core Uniques for this build, you can transition to what is essentially the final version, with a skill tree, playstyle, and paragon board slightly different to those described in the main sections of this guide. The addition of Mythic Uniques from this point are more build-enhancing than build-enabling.

This is the final version of the build's progression, including all regular Unique items, Mythic Uniques, Legendary Aspects, Temper mods and Masterworking, leaving you with a great all-rounder build for all content in the game. Additional variants use this as a baseline to optimize around certain activities.

Gear & Skills

Mythic Boulder Druid Gear
Mythic Boulder Druid Skills
  • Ring of Starless Skies is a very popular choice for its overstatted Critical Strike Chance and Attack Speed rolls and insane Unique effect. The double All Resistance implicit is pretty great, too, with the difficulty changes.
  • Shroud of False Death is an excellent addition, as its +1 to All Passive skills implicit is a massive offensive and defensive boon. On top of that, its All Stats roll is helpful for capping Critical Strike Chance, Armor, and Resistances and meeting Rare Node requirements in the paragon board. The stealth is great for moving and setting up between packs. Though not nearly as much damage, Tyrael's Might is always worth consideration as you ascend through Torment Tiers to combat the Resistance and Armor penalties. Socket Skulls in your jewelry if you go this route.

There is no change from the Mythic Bestial version.

Pit Push Boulder Druid Gear
Pit Push Boulder Druid Skills
  • When fighting monsters in high tiers of the Pit, remember that after crowd controlling elites for 5 seconds, they become Unstoppable for 8 seconds. This may be the right moment to start kiting them around because your damage done goes way down and they can freely retaliate.
  • In high tier boss fights, beware that many of your conditional damage and damage reduction modifiers cannot activate outside of stagger phases. This means they generally deal more damage against you than regular monsters and you have to prioritize dodging the attacks from shadow bosses while you can barely scratch them outside of stagger bursts.

This is an Overpower build using Ursine Strength Key Passive.
