How Does Energy Work in Torchlight Infinite

Last Updated:April 15, 2024|Change Log

Welcome to the Energy Guide. Energy is a system you need to understand to succeed in Torchlight Infinite. It determines how many Support Skills you can use on your Active and Passive Skills to deal more damage and have better defenses. This guide covers everything you need to know about how Energy works, where to get more, and how to use it.

To find out more about how skills work in Torchlight Infinite check out our Skill System Overview.

Obtaining Energy

Starting at item level 45 Energy starts appearing on gear. The maximum is scaled by the item level, NOT the level required to equip the item. This scaling caps out at item level 80.

122 Energy

  • Chest Armor
  • 2-Handed Weapons
Large items have 122 Energy.

61 Energy

  • Helmets
  • Gloves
  • Boots
  • Shields
  • 1-Handed Weapons
Most items have 66 Energy.

No Energy

  • Amulets
  • Rings
  • Belts
  • Hero Relics
Trinkets do not have Energy.

You also gain 1 Energy per character level; this is 100 additional Energy by leveling up.

Pro tip: Use Energy Cores for Gear Empowerment to randomize the energy value on an item. When you have a good piece of gear with low Energy, empower it until you get near the maximum. Or alternatively, purchase a high energy base in the Trade House. See our Trading Guide for more information.

Using Energy

Assign Energy in the Skills Menu. The default keybind is K on PC, or tap "Skills" from the backpack on Mobile. Then click the blue icon seen to the right. To see all of your current energy sources use the small icon marked with an "i".

Click here to assign or remove Energy.

Pro Tip: Clicking or Tapping a locked support slot on the Skills Menu unlocks it if you have sufficient Energy.

Skill Slots

The 5 Active Skill slots gain the first support via campaign progression so if you don't have all 5 yet keep going and they'll unlock soon. From there assign up to 4 more supports to a skill (the costs are listed next to the skill type). For Active Skills it costs 0, 10, 15, 50, and then 100 Energy. For the 3 Passive Skills it costs 10, 10, 15, 50, and 100 Energy. This is assigned by clicking or tapping the green + on a selected skill. Energy is reclaimed by clicking or tapping the blue - on a selected skill.

Use Energy to Support your Skills

Always prioritize having 5 supports for your Main Skill, which costs 175 Energy. By the endgame you have ~520 Energy to work with so you can either have a few skills with a lot of supports, or a lot of skills with 4-5 of them

Pro Tip: Sometimes Supports and Passive Skills become inactive when changing gear. Always double check and use the green + to reassign your Energy!
