The Carnevil build features a unique playstyle that revolves around Poison Dart being shot by hordes of Fetishes. It has been around for a long time, starting with Season 3 using Zunimassa's Haunt.
Unfortunately, this build fell completely out of relevance despite some buffs in Season 12 and 16 to Mask of Jeram and Carnevil. It is only with Season 17 buffing Carnevil again and The Dagger of Darts (or DoD for short) that this build became one of the strongest Witch Doctor setups in the game.
While Carnevil is often used with Zunimassa's Haunt Set, it can be played using Legacy of Dreams which allows for way more flexibility in terms of gearing and skill setup choices.
Even though the LoD setup is a true powerhouse for speedfarming, Legacy of Nightmares becomes mandatory for high endgame push and is by a long shot the best setup to compete on the No Set leaderboard!
In Season 25, Soul Shards with the amazing Dregs of Lies as well as the rework of Shukrani's Triumph bumped the build as one of the best solo push builds in Diablo III.
This build is an Area Damage (AD) build, since Fetishes, and most importantly Poison Darts they shoot, can proc it. This build develops a completely unique Pet playstyle with intriguing interactions (see Mechanics), where you need to manage your Fetishes very carefully to wreak havoc on your opponents. Positioning is absolutely critical as only the 10 Fetishes closest to you shoot a Poison Dart when you do, aiming where your cursor is. This guide will go over everything you need to know about those wild Dart-shooting Fetishes!
High Burst Damage ✔ Unique Pet Playstyle ✔ Great Attack Speed Scaling ✔ Rewards Excellent Gameplay ✔
❌ Squishy ❌ Difficult Execution ❌ Rarely Gets an Oculus Proc ❌ Vulnerable to Crowd Control
Core Setup
Items
The Dagger of Darts grants us 500% increased damage and allows Poison Darts to pierce targets.
Carnevil is the core item that makes this build work as 10 of your Fetishes will now shoot a powerful Poison Dart whenever you do.
Mask of Jeram increases all Pet damage by 200%. This effect is additive with Elemental damage on Bracers and Amulet.
Depth Diggers gives us another 100% damage boost on our main skill Poison Dart.
Stone Gauntlets provide an outrageous amount of mitigation and their negative effect can be fully negated by Ice Climbers.
Lakumba's Ornament provides us with another 70% damage reduction with Soul Harvest Languish which already gives us 15% Intelligence and 50% Armor.
Aquila Cuirass grants us an easy 50% damage reduction as we barely spend any Mana.
Squirt's Necklace provides us with a damage multiplier as long as we are not getting hit. We adopt a ranged playstyle and use Fetishes as meat shields to protect us.
Convention of Elements is another separate damage multiplier, giving you triple damage for Poison Darts shot by Fetishes during your Poison cycle.
The Witching Hour is used in every setup for the Attack Speed and Critical Hit Damage which are great offensive stats.
Season 32 Ethereals
Ethereals are powerful rare weapons that can only be found during Season 32. They were initially the Season 24 Theme. They have incredible stats, a random Legendary power, and a free passive for your class. Read our Ethereal Mechanics Guide for full details on how they work and our Ethereal Farming Guide to learn how to acquire them. What you should prioritize on them is the following:
The Legendary Power This build requires The Dagger of Darts and Echoing Fury to be functional. We need our Ethereal to roll one of these powers so we can cube the other. We also want a good roll on our Legendary power if it has a range. For speed content it is always helpful to have Ethereals with In-geom power, so keep those if you find them.
The Ethereal Itself There are 3 different weapons available to us, each with its own benefits:
The Gidbinn - This is the Ethereal we absolutely want as it is the only one granting 200% damage to Voodoo Skills, which includes Fetishes. Its high Attack Speed is very beneficial to us as well.
Ghostflame and Arioc's Needle - These are better than normal Weapons but they're not giving 200% damage to Fetishes, hence they are both tremendously weaker than The Gidbinn.
The EtherealStat Rolls Each Ethereal comes with its own fixed set of powerful affixes. While some have a static value, many have a wide stat range. This means the difference between good and bad and good rolls is significant and something you should look for.
A Useful Passive This is just icing on the cake because a fifth passive is not going to make or break your build. You're better off hunting for the things above. Check out the Passives section down below to see which ones you're looking for.
Global Stat Priorities
You want to stack damage stats wherever possible, especially Attack Speed, Critical Hit Chance and Damage as well as Fetish Army Damage and Poison Dart Damage. Area Damage works with Fetishes and is a good stat to focus on when you can. Poison Damage is always a decent damage stat but its value is significantly decreased due to Mask of Jeram being additive with Elemental Damage.
Make sure to focus on Attack Speed to reach a high Breakpoint. It is the most important stat to stack for this build as Fetishes with Carnevil benefit twice from it (see Mechanics).
Cooldown Reduction is not really needed as Grave Injustice will do all the work, especially with some Pickup Radius and Thing of the Deep. It is still a good defensive stat to get on items lacking good offensive options like Shoulders.
Crowd Control Reduction is an incredibly valuable secondary Affix to roll on both Rings, Amulet and Helmet as we are very sensitive to Hard Crowd Control effects and mitigating these will ease up our gameplay significantly. Make sure to get the Primary Affixes locked in before attempting to get CCR though.
Assembling the Build
1. Do the Challenge Rift for the materials to cubeLegendary Powers. You can complete this once a week for additional resources and we always update the guide for you!
2. This is a Legacy of Dreams build whose success is heavily dependent on this gem's rank. The first order of business is to equip a Legendary or Set item in every slot to take advantage of its power. Make sure to not have any Set Bonuses equipped or the gem will be nullified and you will deal no damage! Farm speed Greater Rifts (in under 5 minute clears) to find the items and get this gem as high as possible. Above Rank 25 ancient pieces of gear will give you even greater power. Note that meanwhile Legacy of Dreams is great to get you started, don't forget to farm Legacy of NightmaresRings for high solo push.
Rings to get Convention of Elements, Unity, Rechel's Ring of Larceny and Oculus Ring
Anything from the Gamble list in Step 3 that you haven't already acquired.
5. Do Bounties to acquire several important items for this build:
Act 1: Ring of Royal Grandeur and Pauldrons of the Skeleton King
Act 2: Gloves of Worship
Act 3: Avarice Band
Act 4: Can drop any bounty item from any act
Bounty Turn In: Recipes for Cain's Destiny and Sage's Journey (for your follower)
6. At this point you can somewhat comfortably farm Nephalem or Speed Greater Rifts where you can find all the remaining items you need for different variants of the build. Spend your materials getting items with better rolls and/or ancient quality.
7. Use Primordial Ashes in Kanai's Cube with the new Curiosity of Lorath Nahr recipe to obtain a free Crafted Primal Ancient. Since you can only equip one of them, choosing the right item to focus matters! Great candidates are Weapons, Offhands, Jewelry or any item with an important multiplier. With that in mind, we recommend getting one of the following items:
For breaking walls to pull enemies and increase DPS
Gems
Legacy of Dreams is the Legacy of NightmaresSet in a gem, which frees up two ring slots at the cost of removing Bane of the Stricken. Due to the rings available to us this is a great trade-off to take for speedfarming while high-end solo push will prefer Legacy of Nightmares.
Simplicity's Strength is a mandatory gem as it provides us with a 100% separate damage multiplier and great Life recovery with our Poison Dart.
Enforcer is strictly better than Bane of the Trapped since its damage multiplier is unconditional and all our damage comes from Fetishes. It also allows them to survive in higher Greater Rifts.
Bane of the Stricken helps us kill the Rift Guardian. This is why we need to go for Legacy of Nightmares for high-end Greater Rift push.
For Nephalem Rifts, Boon of the Hoarder is always a default include specifically due to its amazing synergy with Avarice Band.
Skills
We use Poison Dart as our main damage dealer. Spined Dart is used in order to ensure good Aquila Cuirass uptime. Our Fetishes' Dart will always deal Poison damage regardless of the rune we take.
Piranhas Piranhado is used to apply a 15% additive damage debuff and pull enemies together. Keep in mind you need to kill monsters to reset its cooldown with Grave Injustice.
Spirit Walk Jaunt or Severance for mobility and survival purposes.
Soul Harvest Languish for massive damage and damage reduction buffs with Lakumba's Ornament.
Horrify Frightening Aspect for a permanent 50% Armor buff.
The final slot is open and can be filled with different options. Big Bad Voodoo Slam Dance in combination with Grave Injustice for 15% Attack Speed and Additive Damage is the best damage output option. Summon Zombie Dogs Life Link in combination with Uhkapian Serpent is a popular defensive option otherwise.
Passives
Fetish Sycophants is mandatory in order to get Fetishes without using Fetish Army as a skill. You can have a maximum of 15 Fetishes from this passive. You have to be careful when you are starting a Rift or have lost your Fetishes (e.g. from a death), as you will be very squishy and you won't be dealing a lot of damage until you spend some time attacking to bring them back. Additionally, you can use the Fetishes as meat shields to tank hits and block attacks for you.
Grave Injustice is the cornerstone of our playstyle. It reduces cooldowns when you kill enemies, allowing a very high uptime of Spirit Walk and Big Bad Voodoo.
Pierce the Veil is a 20% additive damage buff at the expense of increased Mana costs. As this is a Generator build with Poison Dart the latter does not matter.
Spirit Vessel as a cheat death mechanic because you are really squishy and dying requires you to rebuild your Fetish Sycophants from scratch.
Confidence Ritual or Gruesome Feast are great options if you have a fifth passive or feel brave enough to get rid of Spirit Vessel. Defensive passives like Swampland Attunement or Jungle Fortitude are also good options.

Altar of Rites
The Altar of Rites is a tree that grants tremendous powers to your entire account in exchange for sacrifices. It requires you to farm Bounties, kill the Ubers, craft the Staff of Herding, and more. Completing all 26 of these tasks, along with sacrificing 6 Primal Ancients grants you extra Damage, Defense, Quality of Life, Increased Drops and 3 Potion Super Powers. Read the full guides on Unlocking the Altar and the Altar Mechanics by Raxxanterax and Chewingnom to learn everything about this fantastic mechanic!
Note: The suggested path assumes you are playing Solo and used the Challenge Rift Cache to help you level up.
Optimal Path
Node 2: Choose Anointed to gain a full set of 70 yellows from level 18-70!
Node 6: Rush to gain double Bounties to help unlock other Nodes in the Altar.
Nodes 7-14: These are the last Nodes you can gain until the Challenge Rift resets. Take at least 1 Node at the bottom of each path to unlock all 3 Potion Super Powers. Pick up the Mirror Node at the top for a colossal 41% extra XP all season. Remember to unlock Father once you clear GR70 solo and have your first Primal!
Nodes 15-26: Pick up the final Quality of Life, Damage, and Defense Nodes (in that order) to finish the Altar.
Potion Super Powers: Take Father first, then Mother, and finally Mortal.
Disclaimer: The Mortal and Mother Potions require you to salvage 2 and 3 Primals respectively. Unlock them as soon as you have those materials as they don't cost a point!
Follower
Patch 2.7.0 revamped the follower system giving all 3 hirelings new powers and the emanate system. The first thing you should do is read our complete follower guide and remember the key takeaways:
The emanation system allows followers to share certain legendary and set powers with you. The most important ones are: The Flavor of Time, Nemesis Bracers, Avarice Band, Sage’s Journey and Cain’s Destiny. Click the guide above for the full list.
Follower’s powers are based on their main stat (maxed at 25,000, but they have a 2.5x multiplier so you only need 10,000). This means we stack Intelligence on the Enchantress, Dexterity on the Scoundrel and Strength on the Templar.
Guardian's Jeopardy(3) Bonus works for followers by improving their inherent stat multiplier from x2.5 to x3.5, making it slightly easier to hit the 25,000 main stat threshold if needed.
Followers share 20% of their Experience, Magic and Gold Find stats with you.
Legendary gems do not work on followers, except Esoteric Alteration and Mutilation Guard.
With Enforcer equipped on the player, it is much easier to keep followers alive without immortality relic since the 90% damage reduction works on them.
Cooldown Reduction does not work for any follower skill except the Templar’s Heal.
Followers never deal significant damage; you’re on your own to clear the content.
Select Follower
Speed GR Enchantress
For T16 we recommend this Enchantress setup because she is the only follower that gives Cooldown Reduction, allowing you to spam your abilities more. Since this is T16 content, she’ll stay alive with Esoteric Alteration and Mutilation Guard and use Hand of the Prophet to gain all skills. This will give us Cooldown Reduction, Elemental Damage, Reduced Damage from Ranged Attacks, Armor, Attack Speed, and a Cheat Death. Stat Priorities:Since we do not have the immortality focus, we need to stack survivability on our Enchantress.
Intelligence > Vitality > Life % > Armor > All Resistance > Life Per Hit > Attack Speed.
Key Items:
The Flavor of Time: For double duration on Pylons.
Nemesis Bracers: For extra Elites, Death’s Breaths and In-geom procs.
Avarice Band: For the insane pickup radius.
Ring of Royal Grandeur: To complete our sets.
Gloves of Worship: For 10 Minute Shrine Buffs.
Sage’s Journey: For double Death’s Breaths.
Cain’s Destiny: For 25% more Greater Rift Keystones.
For Greater Rift with Legacy of Dreams using Unity we recommend this Enchantress setup because she is the only follower that gives Attack Speed, which double dips due to Carnevil. This will also give us Slow from Temporal Pulse, Cooldown Reduction from Prophetic Harmony as well as Damage Reduction and Armor from Powered Shield.
Stat Priorities:Since we have the immortality relic, we do not need to stack survivability on our Enchantress.
Intelligence > Vitality > Life % > Armor > All Resistance > Life Per Hit > Attack Speed.
Key Items:
The Flavor of Time: For double duration on Pylons.
Nemesis Bracers: For more progression from Elites.
Oculus Ring: For 85% increased damage.
Unity: For 50% damage reduction if you're also wearing one.
Blind Faith: To consistently blind the Rift Guardian, helping with Squirt's Necklace.
Ice Climbers: To make your follower immune to Freeze and Immobilize effects.
The Witching Hour, Tal Rasha's Relentless Pursuit and Cain's Destiny: For more Attack Speed.
For Greater Rift with Legacy of Nightmares we recommend this Enchantress setup because she is the only follower that gives Attack Speed, which double dips due to Carnevil. She’ll stay alive because we have Enforcer with Esoteric Alteration and Mutilation Guard and use Hand of the Prophet to gain all skills. This will give us Attack Speed, Cooldown Reduction, Elemental Damage, Reduced Damage from Ranged Attacks, Armor, and a Cheat Death.
Stat Priorities:Since we do not have the immortality focus, we need to stack survivability on our Enchantress.

Gameplay
When you enter a Greater Rift, start off by using Spirit Walk to run towards enemies and use Horrify Frightening Aspect and Soul Harvest to get your defensive buffs. Never let them drop! Then start to gather monsters with Poison Dart while building your Fetish Sycophants army.
Use Spirit Walk to move through enemies that are in the way, for defense, to dodge affixes and projectiles or similar. Don't waste it when you don't need it! When making a pull, engage several screens of monsters by bodypulling and shooting Poison Darts, then group them up using Piranhas Piranhado.
When you are ready to damage monsters:
Position yourself and your Fetishes away from the pull to not get hit and get a good shooting angle.
Cast Big Bad Voodoo if its cooldown is ready for a nice damage burst.
Start shooting Poison Dart into the pull when your Convention of ElementsPoison cycle is coming. Your Fetishes will mirror your attacks and cast towards the same location.
If you are fortunate enough to get an Oculus Ring spawn near you, you can quickly get inside while shooting.
Use Spirit Walk wisely to protect your Squirt's Necklace stacks, especially when a Poison cycle is coming. Time it so that it ends when monsters start to die to reset its cooldown, as Grave Injustice won't work if Spirit Walk is still active.
After your Poison cycle, continue to aggro enemies with Poison Dart and group on Elites with Piranhas Piranhado.
On Rift Guardians:
Do not get hit to maximize Squirt's Necklace stacks. This is where having an army of Fetish Sycophants shines even more as Fetishes are going to tank the Rift Guardian.
On Bloodmaw, use Spirit Walk whenever the Rift Guardian starts its Leap animation. This interrupts it as Bloodmaw needs to have a target to perform this attack.
On Voracity, use Spirit Walk while entering Gas Clouds. As AoE ground effects snapshot toughness upon entering them, you will take 0 damage from the Gas Clouds.
Use the layout and your Fetishes to protect yourself from some Rift Guardians' abilities like on Agnidox, Cold Snap or Erethon. Check out this post about Rift Guardians to learn more!
Hardcore
The Legacy of Nightmares setup is relatively squishy for Hardcore; playing the Legacy of Dreams setup is recommended due to its inherent higher tankyness. Don't forget to play with Spirit Vessel. You can also take the cheat death proc on your follower for extra safety. Check out our dedicated Hardcore Survival Guide to learn more about how to succeed in this game mode!

Echoing Nightmare
Concept In this setup we focus mainly on Movement Speed and some Cooldown Reduction. We have awesome Echoing Fury and Spirit Walk uptime as we are constantly killing enemies with Grave Injustice synergizing with Thing of the Deep and Pickup Radius. We add St. Archew's Gage to protect our Squirt's Necklace for double damage.
Gameplay Cast Summon Zombie Dogs once at the beginning to create minions for your Fierce Loyalty; simply spam-click Horrify, Spirit Walk and Soul Harvest off cooldown. Use Sacrifice Provoke the Pack before shooting on tougher enemies like Rift Guardians.
Horrify in conjunction with Rechel's Ring of Larceny provides you with an incredible amount of Movement Speed, effectively making you fly through Nephalem Rifts while Goldwrap with Boon of the Hoarder and Avarice Band (on your follower) will grant you invincibility.
Setups If you don't like the Convention of Elements rotation, you can swap it with Stone of Jordan without trouble. In groups, swap out The Ess of Johan and Convention of Elements for The Flavor of Time and Avarice Band and replace Warzechian Armguards and Pauldrons of the Skeleton King with Nemesis Bracers and Homing Pads.
Concept We have awesome Echoing Fury and Big Bad Voodoo uptime as we are constantly killing enemies with Grave Injustice synergizing with Pickup Radius. We take St. Archew's Gage to protect our Squirt's Necklace for double damage.
The idea is to farm a Greater Rift tier where you can comfortably clear within 3 to 4 minutes. The gameplay is simply a sped up variant of the solo push one.
Gameplay Keep up your Horrify Frightening Aspect and Soul Harvest buffs at all times. Create huge pulls with Piranhas Piranhado and group them tightly for additional Area Damage and more pierces from The Dagger of Darts. Be aware of your position shooting angle to hit as many enemies as possible!
Setups If you feel too squishy or want to go for higher Greater Rift tiers, swap St. Archew's Gage with Stone Gauntlets and take back Ice Climbers instead of Illusory Boots. If you feel comfortable damage wise or simply prefer the playstyle, swapping Shukrani's Triumph with Thing of the Deep for its synergy with Grave Injustice is a great option. The third cube slot is open and can be replaced with anything else if you don't like The Ess of Johan.
Concept As Bane of the Stricken becomes mandatory in order to kill the Rift Guardian at the highest tiers, you need to switch to Legacy of Nightmares at some point. Legacy of Dreams is a tankier version and is fine to play as long as the Rift Guardian doesn't take more than 4 or 5 minutes.
Gameplay Don't forget you play a rotation based build with Convention of Elements. Try to set up the pulls with Piranhas Piranhado for the Poison rotation, cast Big Bad Voodoo and perform a huge damage burst. use downtime to gather up more enemies but be careful to not die as you do not have Fetish Army on your skill bar to instantly recast Fetishes. You need to spawn them one by one by attacking with Poison Dart to proc Fetish Sycophants. Don't forget to use your Fetishes as meat shields by hiding behind them, this is a great way to reduce incoming damage and maintain Squirt's Necklace!
Setups Feel free to take any Shoulders you have instead of Pauldrons of the Skeleton King as any will do. If survivability is an issue, swap Big Bad Voodoo Slam Dance for Ghost Trance or even use Uhkapian Serpent in combination with Summon Zombie Dogs Life Link instead of BBV for more consistent toughness at the cost of Shukrani's Triumph 100% additive damage buff. If you're feeling comfortable and want to squeeze out as much damage as you can, Circle of Life + Sacrifice Provoke the Pack instead of Horrify is a valid option.
Replace Piranhado with Wave of Mutilation to increase the range at which you apply the damage debuff.
Gameplay
Click Speed Pylon instantly to boost your mobility and dodge Green Meteors.
Around Wave 90, click Channeling Pylon and Power Pylon.
After Wave 100, use Conduit Pylon.
At Wave 122, stop attacking and run to the corner to let the timer run out.
We have awesome Echoing Fury, Big Bad Voodoo and Spirit Walk uptime as we are constantly killing enemies with Grave Injustice. Try to dodge and keep your distance due to your low toughness. Don't forget to use your Fetishes as meat shield by hiding you behind them, this is a great way to reduce incoming damage! Be aware of your position and the angle at which you shoot your Poison Darts in order to hit as many enemies as possible. Use Spirit Walk wisely to damage burst with Shukrani's Triumph.
Mechanics
Fetishes & Attack Speed
In this specific build Fetishes double dip Attack Speed, which means they benefit twice from it!
Fetishes (Fetish Army and Fetish Sycophants) damage, like most Pets, is scaled using Attack Speed as a separate damage multiplier. This means Attack Speed is always a damage gain for Pets.
Carnevil makes Fetishes shoot a Poison Dart when you do. Because of this particular interaction, Fetishes will scale with your own Attack Speed as well. Hence, you want to aim for a high Breakpoint on Poison Dart.
As an example, the 75% Attack Speed from the 5 Echoing Fury stacks results in a 117% damage output increase with full Attack Speed on gear in the push setup. Speed Pylon is a 41.5% damage output increase without any Echoing Fury stack and a 27.5% increase with 5 stacks.
Carnevil
With this item equipped, the 10 Fetishes closest to you will shoot a Poison Dart when you do.
Fetishes will shoot in the direction of your cursor, which makes cursor and Fetishes positioning a crucial point to manage in order to maximize damage output.
The Poison Dart shot by Fetishes is a special one that uses the Poison Element and deals 455% weapon damage instead of the usual 185%, meaning the rune from your own Poison Dart does not matter.
The Poison Dart shot by Fetishes does hit the enemies twice! As a result, Fetishes' Poison Dart is around 5 times more powerful than your own, before even taking damage multipliers specific to Pets into account.
Mask of Jeram
The 200% Pet Damage bonus from Mask of Jeram is a specific case: its damage buff is additive with your Elemental Damage (Fire / Physical / Poison / Cold). As a consequence, "Fire / Physical / Poison / Cold skills deal X% more damage" affixes (mainly found on Bracers and Amulet slots), grants a lower relative damage increase to builds using Mask of Jeram in comparison to other builds.
Shukrani's Triumph
The 100% Damage bonus while in the Spirit Realm from Shukrani's Triumph is an additive damage buff, meaning its effect is additive with other buffs such as Pierce the Veil.
You are in the Spirit Realm when in Spirit Walk and when Spirit Vessel procs.
After the initial duration of Spirit Walk (2 seconds or 3 with Jaunt), you stay indefinitely under Spirit Walk until you attack 3 times or until you have any Elite enemy within 20 yards.
A very interesting property of Spirit Walk is that you do not generate aggro under this effect, which means you are invisible to all monsters. This mechanic can be used at your advantage on some Rift Guardians which need a target to perform some abilities (Bloodmaw's Jump for instance).
Fetish Army & Poison Dart Damage
Fetish Army Damage on your items (Shoulders, Chest and Off-Hand) is a separate damage multiplier for Fetish Army as well as Fetish Sycophants.
Poison Dart Damage from Belt and Pants is also a separate damage multiplier for Fetishes because of the Carnevil interaction, despite being additive damage for your character.
As you can get up to 55% Fetish Army Damage and 30% Poison Dart Damage on your equipment, those stats put together translate to a 2.015 damage multiplier for this build.
Zunimassa's String of Skulls comes with 20-25% Fetish Army Damage as a fifth primary affix instead of the usual 10-15% affix roll.
Piranhas Piranhado
This ability is one of the few ways in the game to pixelpull enemies.
If used on top of enemies, it pulls them close together but does not pixelpull most of them. In order to get the best pull possible, it has to be used on a spot with no other nearby enemies.
Summary
Put together the core items and level up the Legacy of Dreams gem.
Build your army of Fetish Sycophants as soon as you can.
Be very mindful about your positioning, your Fetishes position and where you are aiming Poison Dart.
Pulling off the proper rotation around Convention of Elements generates a tremendous damage burst with Echoing Fury.
Conquer Sanctuary with your deadly army of Dart-shooting Fetishes!
