Skeleton Mages Necromancer
Last Updated:May 18, 2023|Change Log
WARNING: THIS GUIDE IS OUTDATED. WE DO NOT RECOMEND PLAYING THIS BUILD.
Introduction
The Summon Skeletons Mages Necromancer is a league start bossing specialist that excels at clearing non-Uber bosses on a low budget, and Uber bosses with a high budget. You are a summoner with a totem playstyle. Cast your Skeleton Mages, Curse the boss, and watch your Minions do all the heavy lifting. Equipping the Fleshcrafter lets your minion’s bypass monster’s resistances, giving us a ton of free damage and making short work of tanky monsters.
Strengths and Weaknesses
Skills Breakdown
Ascendancy Breakdown
The Necromancer is the choice as it offers many speed mapping enhancements as well as modest defensive bonuses
- Mindless Aggression gives minions increased Damage, Attack, Cast and Movement speed.
- Unnatural Strength adds 2 levels to all Minion Skill Gems, granting additional damage and survivability.
- Commander of Darkness gives additional damage, Attack/Cast Speed and an Elemental Resistance aura to you and your Minions.
- Mistress of Sacrifice allows your Offerings to also affect you. It also gives extra Skill Effect Duration for your buffs and Minions.
To learn how the Labyrinth works, feel free to consult our Labyrinth Guide!
Playstyle
When playing as the Summon Skeletons Mages Necromancer your primary focus is to summon your Skeletons every 4-5 seconds to keep up the Rebirth Cluster node making your skeletons immune to damage. Activating Vaal Summon Skeletons costs Vaal Souls which are obtained by killing monsters, or dealing damage to Unique Bosses. Use Vaal Summon Skeletons when mapping on big juicy packs early, but make sure you save a use for the Map Boss to quickly delete it.
Level and play as Absolution until you obtain the "3 key items" . The Absolution playstyle relies on the damage of the Gem killing a target until the Absolution sentinels are summoned. They continue to use this ability, but not apply the debuff themselves, for a set duration. Activate your temporary aura and curse the boss to give a boost in damage. Once you get your trigger wand (1st step in "Milestones") you only have to activate your Aura, Curse the enemies and your Absolution Sentinels take care of the monsters for you.
Mapping
When mapping, summon your Summon Skeletons Mages and Shield Charge to the next pack of monsters re-summoning them as you go. Whenever taking on strong monsters, cast your Sniper's Mark before laying into them. Make sure to have a use of Vaal Summon Skeletons ready for the map boss to nuke it down.
Bossing
When dealing with tougher enemies, make sure to cast your Sniper's Mark and walk over the boss with your Brittle Boots. If you have the higher budget variant of this build, your Animate Guardian handles the Brittle Boots debuffing for you. Your goal is to keep your skeletons as summoned recently which means in the last 4-5 seconds so that they are always immune to damage.
Build Scaling
Summon Skeletons Mages are Minions, Spells and Casters. Because of these tags, focus on the following modifiers to improve your damage:
- Increased Minion Damage
- + Levels of Spells and Minion Skill Gems
- Increased Minion Cast Speed
- Zealotry Aura
- Sniper's Mark Enemies take increased Projectile Damage
- Charges and buffs from our Raise Spectre summons.
- Sources of additional maximum skeletons from our Helmet Craft and our Anointment.
Scaling Minion Damage is unique compared to other builds. Only mods that specify Minion will apply to your Minions. Getting 8% increased Cast Speed does not apply to Minions, but getting Minions have 8% increased Cast Speed applies to them now that it specifies.
Necromancer's have good access to a wide variety of defences from gear and passive Skill tree.
- Armour from Determination combined with Molten Shell and hybrid Armour /Evasion pieces
- 50%+ Attack Block and 75% Spell Block
- 100% Spell Suppression
- Freeze, and Shock Immunity
- 10 Fortification stacks
- 5% Life or 2% of Armour as Energy Shield on Block from your Shield
- 90% Maximum Elemental Resistances
- Critical Strike Immunity
The above defenses grant the build really solid mitigation against bosses since most boss abilities are spells and amazing recovery against rapid hits you'd encounter in maps from your recovery on block shield.

Key Leveling Notes
Absolution is currently the best way to level minions. Despite being a minion gem, Absolution has a 200% Effectiveness of Added Damage. This means that the wand craft and Added Lightning Damage Support add a substantial increase to the initial hit of Absolution. If the initial hit kills a target, it will activate Onslaught Support, provided they are linked together. While the summoned minions are important, they only help on longer fights.
This build will do Library in Act 3 to gain access to Shield Charge and Physical to Lightning Support. Onslaught makes Shield Charge one of the best movement abilities in the game, even early on.
The "Wand Craft" is the easiest way to make any caster leveling better. Selling a magic wand, an Orb of Alteration, and a normal Topaz Ring produces a wand like this: Snapping Driftwood Wand.
If you need a magic wand, purchase a 3-linked wand from Nessa with favorable colors, those being Blue-Blue-Green, Blue-Blue-Blue, or Blue-Green-Red. Then use an Orb of Transmutation on it. If you need a Topaz Ring, you can sell an Iron Ring with any Skill Gem that is colored Green.
Note: Selling rare items identified they will give you Alteration Shards, while selling them unidentified gives Transmutation Shards.
Campaign Step By Step
Beginner players should follow Enki's Campaign Progression guide.
The levels listed below are based on speedrunning. Always be greater or equal to the levels listed.
Step 1: Muling Onslaught
- Create a Scion character
- Scion gets access to Onslaught Support, which grants 20% Increased Movement Speed, Attack Speed, and Cast Speed. This is an amazing buff for running through the campaign.
- Note that brand new accounts do not get access to the Scion character. In this case, ignore this step entirely and replace Onslaught Support with Summon Phantasm Support.
- Kill Hillock. Talk to Tarkleigh and choose Molten Strike as your reward.
- Talk to Tarkleigh, click Purchase Items, and copy the following line: -[rgb]-.-|b-b-g|b-[bg]-b|g-b-b|nne
- Paste it in the vendor window in-game and it will highlight four links, movement speed boots, and items with Blue-Blue-Red (BBR) or Blue-Blue-Blue (BBB) sockets. This is called a regex filter, and is imperative to finding important items quickly!
- Talk to Nessa, click Purchase Items, and paste in the regex: -[rgb]-.-|b-b-g|b-[bg]-b|g-b-b|nne
- Next put all of your items into the Stash, hit escape, and press EXIT TO CHARACTER SELECT. Selecting a different log out option puts you in a queue on a league start.
Step 1: Level 2
- Create a Witch character
- Kill Hillock. Talk to Nessa, click Purchase Items, and paste in the regex: -[rgb]-.-|b-b-g|b-[bg]-b|g-b-b|nne
- Talk to Tarkleigh and choose Freezing Pulse as your reward.
- This spell does more damage at point blank range, so don't cast this far away from monsters!
- Talk to Tarkleigh, click Purchase Items, and copy the following line : -[rgb]-.-|b-b-g|b-[bg]-b|g-b-b|nne
- After this, complete the quests Mercy Mission and Breaking some Eggs.
- Upon killing Hailrake, hit escape and press EXIT TO CHARACTER SELECT (or type /exit in chat). This saves you a Portal Scroll. Selecting a different log out option puts you in a queue on a league start. This "return to town" method is used many times in this guide.
Step 2: Level 4
- Talk to Nessa and grab: Quicksilver Flask and Summon Phantasm Support.
- Purchase Holy Flame Totem from Nessa and paste: -[rgb]-.-|b-b-g|b-[bg]-b|g-b-b|nne
- Talk to Tarkleigh and grab: Flame Wall and Frostblink.
- The primary purpose of Flame Wall is so any projectile that passes through the wall gains extra damage. Cast Holy Flame Totem followed by Flame Wall. Any monster still alive should be finished off with Freezing Pulse.
- Click Purchase Items from Tarkleigh and paste in the regex: -[rgb]-.-|b-b-g|b-[bg]-b|g-b-b|nne
- Complete the quests Dweller of the Deep and The Caged Brute.
- Note: you only have to reach the Waypoint in Lower Prison to acquire a gem from the quest.
Step 3: Level 8
- Reach Lower Prison and use the Waypoint back to town.
- Talk to Nessa and grab: Added Lightning Damage Support.
- Click Purchase Items from Nessa and paste in the regex: -[rgb]-.-|b-b-g|b-[bg]-b|g-b-b|nne
- Sell Nessa a magic wand, an Orb of Alteration, and a normal Topaz Ring. This step is incredibly important, and is covered in the Key Leveling Notes found above.
- Talk to Tarkleigh to grab your Passive Skillpoint.
- Click Purchase Items from Tarkleigh and paste in the regex: -[rgb]-.-|b-b-g|b-[bg]-b|g-b-b|nne
- Go back to Lower Prison, complete the Trial of Ascendancy, and slay Brutus.
Step 4: Level 10
- After killing Brutus, return to town.
- Click Purchase Items from Nessa, then paste in the regex: -[rgb]-.-|b-b-g|b-[bg]-b|g-b-b|nne
- Talk to Tarkleigh and grab Flame Dash. This replaces Frostblink.
- Click Purchase Items from Tarkleigh, then paste in the regex: -[rgb]-.-|b-b-g|b-[bg]-b|g-b-b|nne
- Complete the quest The Marooned Mariner and grab the waypoint in Merveil's Caverns.
Step 5: Level 12
- After killing Fairgraves and reaching the Waypoint in Merveil's Caverns, return to town.
- Talk to Nessa and grab Absolution.
- Buy Spirit Offering from Nessa for one Orb of Transmutation.
- This gem consumes corpses to buff your minions with increased Physical Damage as Extra Chaos Damage, on top of giving your minions much needed Chaos and Elemental Resists.
- Talk to Bestel and grab the Passive Skillpoint, then complete The Siren's Cadence.
- Equip a Sapphire Ring for Merveil to nullify her Cold Damage. Kill Merveil and move onto Act 2!
Step 1: Level 12
- After killing Merveil, walk north into The Forest Encampment (Town).
- Talk to Greust, click Sell Items, and sell all items you acquired from Merveil.
- Go to the right of town into The Old Fields and complete The Great White Beast.
Step 2: Level 13
- After completing The Great White Beast, go to the Waypoint at The Crossroads and return to town.
- Talk to Yeena and select the magic Quicksilver Flask reward.
- At this point, use two Life flasks, one Mana flask, and two Quicksilver Flasks.
- Waypoint back to The Crossroads, and finish the quest Intruders in Black in the Chambers of Sin 2.
- Make sure to complete the Trial of Ascendancy in the Chambers of Sin 2.
Step 3: Level 16
- After killing Fidelitas and getting the Baleful Gem, return to town.
- Talk to Greust and select the gem Herald of Thunder.
- Talk to Yeena and purchase the gems Summon Skitterbots and Desecrate.
- Summon Skitterbots summons two small little minions. They run around and apply Shock and Chill to monsters. Shock increases damage taken, and Chill slows down enemies.
- Desecrate summons corpses, which can be consumed by your Spirit Offering spell to buff your minions.
- Go left from the Town to complete the quest Sharp and Cruel in The Weaver's Chambers.
Step 4: Level 18
- Kill The Weaver, pick up Maligaro's Spike, and return to town.
- Talk to Silk and get the gem Controlled Destruction Support.
- Complete the quest Deal with the Bandits.
- Waypoint to the Crossroads, go right to the Broken Bridge, kill Kraityn, and return to town.
- Waypoint to the Riverways, go north to The Wetlands, and kill Oak.
- While in the Western Forest, kill Alira and complete the quest The Way Forward.
- Note that The Way Forward is an Act 1 quest that is only completable in Act 2.
Step 5: Level 18
- Talk to Eramir for two Passive Skillpoints.
- Take the Waypoint back to the Act 1 town Lioneye's Watch. Talk to Bestel for an additional Passive Skillpoint for completing The Way Forward.
- Use the Waypoint to travel to The Wetlands in Act 2. Click the Vaal Ruins to open it if you have not already done so.
- Use a Ruby Ring for this zone, as the monsters casting Explosive Arrow are scary.
- At level 20, portal to town and sell your other wand as a magic wand, in addition to an Orb of Alteration, and a rare Topaz Ring.
- Complete the quest Shadow of the Vaal by killing the Act 2 boss, Vaal Oversoul. After this, return to town and complete the Trial of Ascendancy in The Crypt. Once these are done, move onto Act 3!
Step 1: Level 21
- Waypoint to the City of Sarn, kill the Guard Captain, and talk to Clarissa. Complete Lost in Love.
- After completing the Trial of Ascendancy and obtaining Tolman's Bracelet, return to town.
- Talk to Clarissa to obtain the Sewer Keys.
- Talk to Maramoa and choose the gem Conductivity.
- This curse is not incredibly useful at this moment in time, so only use it on Bosses.
Step 2: Level 24
- Talk to Hargan and select Purchase Items. Paste in the regex -[rgb]-.-|b-b-g|b-[bg]-b|g-b-b|nne
- After level 24, you may find a four-link item. Ideally, it will already be R-G-B-B
- If it is not already these colors, use Chromatic Orbs on either an Intelligence-Dexterity or Intelligence-Strength base.
- Complete the quests Victario's Secrets, The Ribbon Spool and The Gemling Queen. Choose the rare Jade Amulet as a reward.
- Ensure that you complete the Trial of Ascendancy from The Catacombs at some point during this cycle.
Step 3: Level 26
- Complete the quest Piety's Pets.
- Ignore the quest Sever the Right Hand. We do not need to kill Gravicius for this build.
- Aim for at LEAST level 27 before killing Piety.
- Farm in The Docks if you are behind in XP. You can reset a zone by holding down Ctrl and left clicking on either a zone entrance or Waypoint.
Step 4: Level 27
- While in the Imperial Gardens, go to the Library and complete the side quest A Fixture of Fate.
- This quest gives access to all gems in the game level 31 and below.
- Gems can level up in any socket, including your off-hand!
- Talk to Siosa and grab Feeding Frenzy Support.
- Purchase the following gems and prioritize equipping them in the following order:
- Shield Charge, link this to Faster Attacks Support
- Herald of Purity - replace Herald of Thunder
Step 5: Level 27
- Try to get your resists close to 75% Fire, Cold, and Lightning.
- The best craft you can make is with the Crafting Bench in your hideout. Use the 16-20% of a single resist craft, which only costs an Orb of Transmutation,
- Talk to Hargan for a Passive Skillpoint (from the quest Victario's Secrets). Then talk to him again and shop for a four-link by pasting in the regex -[rgb]-.-|b-b-g|b-[bg]-b|g-b-b|nne
- Talk to Grigor to get a Passive Skillpoint.
- Complete the Trial of Ascendancy in The Imperial Gardens.
- While fighting Dominus, avoid getting slammed when he raises his fist. Kill Dominus and move on to Act 4!
Step 1: Level 28
- Complete the quest Breaking the Seal.
- Farm Dried Lake until at least level 30.
- Act 4 is when the game strains your resistances. Playing with below 75% elemental resists is extremely dangerous. Start to over-cap resists in this Act, as we are aiming for at least 105% by the time we kill Act 5 Kitava.
- Keep identifying rare items and keep chugging along with high Life and resists gear.
Step 2: Level 30
- Complete the quest An Indomitable Spirit
- Reach the Waypoint in the Crystal Veins and complete the normal Labryinth.
- Ascend as a Necromancer, and choose Mindless Aggression.
- This ascendancy gives very good stats, but this node is taken almost entirely so Cruel Lab can reward Unnatural Strength, one of the best ascendancy points in the game.
Step 3: Level 32
- Do not progress past Crystal Veins without being at least level 32, farm Dried Lake if you need to catch up.
- Complete the quest The Eternal Nightmare by killing Daresso and Kaom.
Step 4: Level 34
- Kill Piety, then complete the quest Corpus Malachus.
- Talk to Piety again, go kill Malachai, and move on to Act five!
Step 1: Level 35
- Get at least 75% resists in Fire, Cold, and Lightning - but aim for 105%, as you lose 30% from killing Kitava.
- Put every armor and jewelry piece you have into the crafting bench in your hideout to see if it has space for a Fire, Cold, or Lightning resist craft. This is only usable if the item has an Open Suffix (hold Alt on an item to see).
- Complete the quest Return to Oriath and talk to Lani for a ring matching the resists you need the most. Get any of the Two-Stones over the single-resist rings, as they are easier to replace later.
- Complete the quests In Service to Science, The Key to Freedom, and reach the Chamber of Innocence
Step 2: Level 38
- Once you enter the Chamber of Innocence, farm this zone until at least level 40. You can reset a campaign zone by holding down CTRL and clicking on the zone or Waypoint.
- If you are clearing the Chamber of Innocence and are still under level 40, use a Portal Scroll and talk to Lani for a Granite Flask
- Talk to Vilenta for a Passive Skillpoint.
- Complete the quest Death to Purity.
Step 3: Level 40
- Complete the quests The Ravenous God and Kitava's Torments.
- When Kitava closes his fist, he will spawn orbs that close in on your location in an X formation, closing in on the center. Avoid any slams and abilities from the large unique monsters that spawn. Kill Kitava, and move onto Act six.
- After killing Kitava, your resists drop by 30%. This should be easy to overcome, and in softcore your resists should be at least 50% each. Every point of resistance gear from here on out drastically increases your survivability!
Step 1: Level 42
- If you are 42, you don't need to farm any XP past this point until Act 9, just be within 6 levels of the zone.
- Entering this Act without 75% all resists is perfectly fine (in softcore!). The elemental damage you take here depends on which part of the Act you are in. The Mud Flats and the Tukohama fight requires Fire res, the Shavronne fight Lightning res, and the Brine King Cold and Lightning res. Using this, it’s okay if your resists initially look like 75% Fire, 50% Cold, and 50% Lightning (again, in softcore). In hardcore, ensure that all resists equal 75% or more.
- Go to your hideout and throw each piece individually at the crafting bench to see if you can craft a Fire, Cold, or Lightning resist on them for 1 Orb of Transmutation each. Obviously only craft the types of resists you need!
- Go out to The Coast and get the Waypoint, then go to the Mud Flats and complete the quest The Father of War.
- Once at the Ridge Waypoint, take it back to The Coast and complete Bestel's Epic.
- Use a Portal Scroll, complete Fallen From Grace, and return to town.
Step 2
- Talk to Lily Roth for 2x Passive Respec Points. Even though the Act 3 vendor Siosa does the same thing as Lily Roth, you still do the quest to get a vendor in your hideout. You can Ctrl+Click on Lily in your hideout to quickly sell.
- Talk to Bestel for either a rare Leather Belt or Citrine Amulet, depending on which slot needs a bigger upgrade.
- Talk to Tarkleigh for a Passive Skillpoint.
- Travel to The Lower Prison and complete the Trial of Ascendancy there.
- Finish the Essence of Umbra by killing Brutus and Shavronne. Grab the Spell Damage craft after the fight.
Step 3
- Kill Abberath in Prisoner's Gate for The Cloven One.
- Grab the Waypoint in The Riverways, then go north to The Wetlands and kill Ryslatha for The Puppet Mistress.
- You may skip Abberath and Ryslatha until late Act 7 if your character is too weak at this point.
- Return to town, then talk to Bestel for a Passive Skillpoint.
- Talk to Tarkleigh for a Zealot Helmet and a Passive Skillpoint.
- Complete the remaining questline to defeat The Brine King, then move onto Act 7.
Step 1
- Select the Brine King Pantheon (the Keybind is Y by default)
- Complete the quest The Silver Locket
- Travel to The Crypt for the Trial of Ascendancy and the map for Essence of the Artist.
- Waypoint back to The Crossroads, travel north to the Chamber of Sins, and complete Web of Secrets.
- Do the Trial of Ascendancy while in the Chambers of Sin 2, and complete The Master of a Million Faces.
Step 2
- Optionally, you may travel back to town at this point and talk to Helena for an amulet reward.
- Gather the seven fireflies for the quest Lighting the Way, and kill Greust for the quest Queen of Despair while in The Dread Thicket.
- Exit The Dread Thicket and travel to The Causeway for Kishara's Star.
- Get to the Waypoint in the Vaal City and talk to Yeena there, then return to town.
- This also frees your inventory of the fireflies!
Step 3
- Select the Pantheon Ralakesh, Master of a Million Faces.
- Talk to Eramir for two Passive Skillpoints.
- Talk to Weylam Roth to select the Quartz Flask and a Passive Skillpoint.
- Talk to Helena and select the Soldier Boots.
- After this, complete the Cruel Labyrinth.
Completing Cruel Lab awards you with Unnatural Strength, which greatly increases your damage output and utility. This is because Raise Spectre gains an additional Maximum Spectre at gem level 13. Go to The Old Fields in Act 7 and raise your maximum amount of Spectres as Carnage Chieftains. These monsters generate Frenzy Charges, and they should be able to survive at this point in time.
Step 4
- Finally, Waypoint back to The Vaal City, travel to Temple of Decay 2, and kill Arakaali. Avoid the cone of poisonous bolts, as well as the purple orbs that spawn far away and travel towards the boss. After this, move onto Act 8!
Step 1
- Kill Doedre for the quest Essence of the Hag, then go to the right towards The Quay.
- Complete the quest Love is Dead, then travel to the Grain Gate to complete The Gemling Legion.
- Continue to the Solaris Temple and get the waypoint in Solaris Temple 1.
- Complete the quest Solar Eclipse and return to town.
Step 2
- Talk to Clarissa for a Passive Skillpoint.
- Talk to Hargan for whichever Two-Stone ring reward you need the most.
- Talk to Maramoa for a Passive Skillpoint.
Step 3: Level 54
- Go back to Solaris Temple 1, travel to the Solaris Concourse, the Harbour Bridge, then Lunaris Concourse.
- Go to the Lunaris Temple 2 and complete Lunar Eclipse.
- Travel to the Lunaris Concourse and kill the Twins Solaris the Eternal Sun and Lunaris the Eternal Moon. Stand behind Solaris when she throws her Fire Spear, and get move away when Lunaris fires Cold Rain from the sky. After this, continue onwards to Act 9 and the best zone in the campaign for farming - the Blood Aqueducts!
Step 1: Level 54
- Your goal is to farm Blood Aqueducts until character level 62 for both gem levels and currency. While farming Blood Aqueduct you might find Humility cards, which sell for approximately 2 Chaos Orb at the start of a league. Sell these, as a 6 link is not needed. Feel free to start shopping for Grimro’s list down below!
- The final goal we have of Blood Aqueduct is to farm gear that has good resistances. We want our resists to be close to 105% when killing Act 10 Kitava, as we get another penalty to our resistances. Mapping with ~60% resists is fine for softcore, but is a definite no-go in hardcore. Continue farming gear, currency, and xp in Blood Aqueducts until 62, then move on to act 10.
Step 2: Level 62
- Go back to the Lunaris Concourse in Act 8 to get the Trial of Ascendancy in The Bath House and Complete Reflection of Terror in the High Gardens
- Return to town and talk to Hargan for a Passive Skillpoint.
Step 3: Level 62
- Complete the quest The Storm Blade. Return to town, talk to Petarus and Vanja for a Fossilised Spirit Shield, Sin for the next quest item, then Petarus and Vanja again. Return back to the Vastiri Desert waypoint and complete the quest Queen of the Sands.
- Return to town and talk to Irasha for a Passive Skillpoint.
Step 4
- Kill The Basilisk in the Boiling Lake
- Complete the quest Fastis Fortuna
- Complete the Trial of Ascendancy in The Tunnel
- Complete the Ruler of Highgate, then return to town and talk to Irasha for a Passive Skillpoint.
Step 5
- Finish the quest Recurring Nightmare by killing Act 9 boss The Depraved Trinity. Avoid the boss' slam, and avoid getting hit by the scorpion ads that spawn. Next, move onto Act 10!
Step 1
- Kill Plaguewing and complete the quest Safe Passage.
- Place a portal in the middle of the Ruined Square, and go to the waypoint in the Control Blocks (left).
- Take the waypoint back to town and talk to Lani in town for a Silver Flask.
- This flask gives us a buff called Onslaught, which substantially increases our speed.
Step 2
- Don't complete the quest Vilenta's Vengeance in the Control Blocks at this time if your character feels weak. Instead, go through your portal that you placed earlier and go to the right this time towards the Ossuary.
- Complete the quest No Love for Old Ghosts and the Trial of Ascendancy in the Ossuary.
- Complete the Merciless Labyrinth and choose the ascendancy point Commander of Darkness.
- Go a bit slower than normal in Merciless Labyrinth, as there is a difficulty spike. Stop for dark shrines, and try to get extra keys if they are along your path. We are looking for currency and gear, and Merciless lab can actually provide a lot of both.
- Commander of Darkness comes at a perfect time, as it gives a 30% boost to Elemental Resistances, right before we lose 30% to Kitava. These resists also greatly increase the survivability of your minions, on top of providing a nice little boost to damage and attack and cast speed.
Step 3
- Kill Avarius to complete the quest Death and Rebirth, then return to town.
- Talk to Bannon with the The Staff of Purity in your inventory.
- Talk to Lani for a Elegant Ringmail.
- Talk to Weylam Roth for 2x Passive Respec Points.
Step 4
- Travel back to the Ravaged Square, talk to Innocence, and complete the quest An End to Hunger.
- Kill Kitava, and move onto the mapping section below - congratulations on completing the campaign!
- Note that killing Kitava reduces your overall resistances by 30%. We prepare for this by obtaining gear with as high resists as possible. Aim for 75% Fire, Cold, and Lightning Resists.
Act 1
- Mule Onslaught Support from Scion
- Paste Regex string to look for good items from vendors: -[rgb]-.-|b-b-g|b-[bg]-b|g-b-b|nne
- Use Freezing Pulse, Holy Flame Totem, and Flame Wall until level 12 when you get Absolution.
- Do the wand craft at level 8 (magic wand + Orb of Alteration + normal Topaz Ring)
Act 2
- For Bandits, kill all for 2 Skill Points
- Do the wand craft on the OTHER wand at level (20 magic wand + Orb of Alteration + rare Topaz Ring)
Act 3
- Paste your regex starting at level 24 to look for a four-link: -[rgb]-.-|b-b-g|b-[bg]-b|g-b-b|nne
- Do the quest A Fixture of Fate in the Library
Act 4
- Keep Resistances at 75% and keep identifying Rares for potential upgrades
- Complete your Normal Labyrinth after level 31.
Act 5
- Get resists to 105% or at least close to
- Farm Chamber of Innocence until at least Level 40
Act 6
- Get Resistances back up to 75%
- Take Brine King as Major Pantheon
Act 7
- Take Ralakesh as Minor Pantheon
- Complete your Cruel Labyrinth after collecting all Act 6 & 7 Quest Rewards Skill Points
- Start using Carnage Chieftain Spectres after completing lab.
Act 8
- Be at least level 54 before entering Blood Aqueducts
Act 9
- Take Garukhan as Minor Pantheon
- Farm Blood Aqueducts until level 62.
Act 10
- Complete the Trials for the Merciless Lab and run it.
- Continue gearing for 105% to All Resistances (75% post Kitava).
Mapping Preparation
You're done with the Campaign and are ready to take on the Path of Exile Endgame. Priority 1 is to ensure your Elemental Resistances are capped (75%) and have sufficient Attributes to continue leveling your Skill Gems. Use Essences you have gathered on any item that is not Magic or Rare already. Items with an open modifier slot can be crafted on. Head to the Crafting Bench and craft Resistances wherever possible according to what you need, and Life wherever else possible.
From this point, you can grind your Atlas out by progressing Maps until you've obtained enough money to buy the "3 key items". On the first day of the league these are expensive, but by day 3 they are easily obtainable. If you wish to purchase them as soon as possible on league start, Heisting and doing the Chaos Orb recipe is a great and easy way to obtain currency.
Map Modifiers
Take note of the below modifiers as they should be avoided or run with caution when they appear on your maps:
- Avoid Elemental Reflect because Absolution deals Lighting Damage (This can be ignored once you swap to Skeleton Mages)
- Watch out for Beyond because the monsters can easily kill your character until you get a Life on Block Shield.
- Less Armour and Block Chance reduces your main defence, so it should be avoided at all costs.
- Reduced Effect Of Auras eliminates your defences.
Recommended Farming Content
First step is to progress through the Atlas following our Atlas Progression Guide. As a bossing focused character, you should focus on gearing your character with strong pieces to prepare yourself to tackle the non-Uber bosses once the low budget gear is acquired. If you're struggling in higher tier content, go a step back and farm up more Currency and Gear. Clicking the League Mechanics below takes you to either a full Explanation Guide or a detailed Currency Farming Guide based around maximising your profits from that mechanic or content.

Pantheon
For information about the Pantheon and how it works, consult our Pantheon Guide!
For Major Pantheon, select Brine King to gain Immunity to Freeze and Reduction of Chill Effect. This bonus is not available at first. It’s acquired with Divine Vessel.
For Minor Pantheon, select Shakari and upgrade it. This grants less duration of Poisons and reduced Chaos damage taken.
Skill Gems
Gems are a fundamental part of your build. Getting the correct link setups before entering Maps and leveling those Gems as you progress through the Atlas is one of your main goal. The Socket pressure on Minion builds is extreme. You need every single Socket on your gear, and an Unset Ring as well.
Main Damage Setups
Use Absolution until you purchase the "3 key items". Link Physical to Lightning Support to convert Physical to Lightning damage to take full use of -resistances. Summon Phantasm Support summons small minions that deal extra damage. Spell Echo Support provides a Cast Speed bonus to Minions and players. Increased Critical Damage Support gives all the Critical Strike Multiplier needed.
Once you obtain your "3 key items" swap to Skeleton Mages. There is 1 important Skill Gem swap to do for Skeleton Mages on pinnacle bosses. Swap Greater Multiple Projectiles Support for Hypothermia Support since an enemy can only be hit by 1 projectile per cast.
Raise Spectres and Zombies
Use Raise Spectre to summon the Carnage, and Host Chieftains to give Frenzy and Power Charges to our Minions. Use Raise Zombie for extra muscle to get that initial kill for our Absolution Minions to spawn. Link Feeding Frenzy Support to give ALL Minions a damage and Cast Speed buff. Elemental Army Support gives Minions extra Maximum Resistances and allows them to inflict Exposure, taking away a portion of monster Resistance.
When you swap to Summon Skeletons Mages exchange Raise Zombie for Summon Stone Golem to get a Life Regen buff. Swap Elemental Army Support for Minion Life Support because you don't need exposure anymore.
Trigger Wand
The wand setup is VERY important. Obtain Trigger a Socketed Spell when you Use a Skill from Unveiling Wands so Desecrate and Bone Offering are automated. Desecrate spawns corpses on the ground, which are consumed by Bone Offering to give Attack and Spell Block once you do Uber lab.
Once you swap to Summon Skeletons Mages use Lifetap Support in the Wand your Mana is not stressed. This makes our Bone Offering and Desecrate cost Life instead of Mana.
Utility and Auras
Put Molten Shell on left mouse button to proc a shell to absorb damage. Use Determination and Defiance Banner to mitigate Physical Damage. Conductivity is a Curse that lowers the enemy Lightning Resistances. Tempest Shield gives Spell Block and Immunity to Shock.
For Summon Skeletons mages swap Conductivity for Punishment to give our Minions extra damage against enemies when they're less than 50% Life.
Movement
Use Shield Charge and Flame Dash as movement abilities for all versions. Convocation calls your to Minions to you, keeping them safe and increasing clear speed.
Additional Utility
Absolution uses Eldritch Battery combined with with Life as Extra Maximum Energy Shield obtained by Unveiling Gravicius Body Armors from Syndicate Missions to spend Energy Shield before Mana for Skill costs. Link Divine Blessing Support with Wrath to create a temporary Aura. Normally you reserve all Mana and don't have enough use, Divine Blessing Support, but since Energy Shield is now a huge Mana pool you get a free Aura. Link Generosity Support to Wrath to boost our Minions Lightning Spell Damage.
After swapping to Summon Skeletons Mages, replace Wrath with Zealotry still keeping Generosity Support linked to only this Aura.
Unset Ring 1
Obtain an Unset Ring as soon as possible to fit in Assassin's Mark for extra Critical Strike Chance and Multiplier with Vixen's Entrapment to allow an automatic additional cursing of enemies when you curse with Conductivity.
Once you swap to Summon Skeletons Mages swap Conductivity for Punishment and Assassin's Mark for Sniper's Mark
Unset Ring 2
Once you hit the "endgame" gear setup you'll need two Unset Rings. This is because you need to fit in an Animate Guardian in your Helmet.
Skill Tree Progression
3 Key Items
Summon Skeletons Mages requires 3 key items to function. You must start the with a different ability until you obtain the "3 key items." Level as Absolution which can carry you all the way through Red Maps and can even complete your early Bossing Invitations on a budget. There is no worry if your build is lacking before being able to swap. Absolution can even be played on its own as a full build but it doesn't have as good a playstyle, coverage and clear, or ease of damage as Skeleton Mages.
The "3 key items" are as follows
- Dead Reckoning jewel allows you to summon Summon Skeletons Mages instead of Warriors with Summon Skeletons.
- Fleshcrafter causes your Skeleton Mages completely ignore Elemental Resistances while your Summon Skeletons have Energy Shield. This is what gives our Skeleton Mages easy damage. It lets the tri-elemental damage of the Mage’s projectiles work at maximum efficiency.
- The downside is that our Minions Life is converted to Energy Shield and they need to maintain their Energy Shield to ignore the monster’s Elemental Resistances:
- Here's where Rebirth Cluster comes in! Now minions can't be damaged if they were summoned recently. This grants minions a 4-second window where they’re invincible AND they’re guaranteed to ignore monster Elemental Resistance
IMPORTANT! Once you swap to Fleshcrafter DO NOT give any Chaos Resistance to your Minions. Extra Chaos Resistance causes them to convert too much of their Life. Without an easy source of Energy Shield Leech or Regen your Raise Spectre and Animate Guardian dies much quicker, or even as soon as you summon them if you've converted all of their Life to Energy Shield.
AND ONE MORE THING When summoning your Spectres, take out Bone Offering and Desecrate from your trigger Wand. Put Desecrate in a different socket (temporarily) so you can freely cast it and so that Bone Offering doesn't consume the corpses you're spawning.
Spectres
Wait until you're level 60 and have a level 14 Raise Spectre Gem before using this Skill.
The Spectres you use for Absolution and Summon Skeletons are the Carnage and Host Chieftains. These are obtained in the Ashen Fields zone from Act 7.
Use Desecrate on the ground and use the corpse targeting hot key (default "A"). Move your cursor until you see the correct name plates pop up. Then use Raise Spectre on the corpse to summon a copy of that monster.
Double up on the Carnage Chieftains when your max Spectre limit is 3, then double up both once you obtain a max limit of 4. These are an amazing choice because they give Frenzy and Power charges to allies.
Charges are 10 second buffs that stack up to (default max) 3 times for each Charge type, and are so much more powerful for Minions compared to players. Frenzy Charges give Minions 5% More Damage, 15% Attack/Cast and Movement Speed per charge! Power Charges give Minions 200% increased Critical Strike Chance per charge!
With 3 Power Charges our Minions have 600% increased Critical Strike Chance, which combined with the extra base Critical Strike Chance from Brittle Boots gets our Minions close to the Critical Strike Chance of 100%.
Animate Guardian
Animate Guardian is only used when you have the upgrades in the “Skeleton Mage Swap” section. Equip your Animate Guardian with Kingmaker, Garb of the Ephemeral, a pair of Brittle Boots and Unnerve Gloves with NO CHAOS RESISTANCE but at least 30% Elemental Resistance for each Element between the Boots and Gloves.
- Kingmaker gives 10 Fortification Stacks which means you take 10% Less Damage from Hits. Minions also gain 50% Critical Strike Multiplier and Culling Strike Support which automatically kills enemies that are <=10% Life.
- Garb of the Ephemeral provides Action Speed cannot be modified below Base Value letting you ignore slows and Nearby Enemies Cannot deal Critical Strikes to help prevent one-shots.
- Equip Animate Guardian with Unnerve Gloves chance against unique enemy gloves by grabbing a pair off the trade site.
- Unnerve makes enemies take 10% increased spell damage from our Skeletons.
- Mask of the Stitched Demon is a bit confusing but the TLDR is; Animate Guardian 's Energy Shield is not usable, but it instead regenerate 1% Life for every 500 maximum Energy Shield it had. With Fleshcrafter 40% of it's maximum Life is converted to Energy Shield because it has a base Chaos Resistance of 20%.
- This gives Animate Guardian >30% Life regenerated each second!
- Use Brittle Boots. Get at least 4 seconds of Brittle Ground.
- Brittle Ground causes Enemies to have +5% Base Critical Strike Chance against them
Character Progression
Early Game Goal
Your first goal will be capping Elemental Resistances and obtaining enough Dexterity/Strength to level Gems and equip all gear, taking [practical application] if needed for Resistance and Stats.
Don't spend too much on Boots, Shield and Body Armor, as they will be replaced when swapping to Summon Skeletons Mages later on.
Milestone 1 - Syndicate unveils
While doing Syndicate Missions, get Gravicius on your board by removing anyone except Aisling and Leo. When a Syndicate Member is removed, they are randomly replaced with one of three characters not a part of your board. Gravicius always begins as one of the three not apart of your board. Once he's on your Syndicate Board, get him to have friendships with all the members, making him show up more often.
- Unveil Wands for Trigger a Socketed Spell when you Use a Skill, with a 8 second Cooldown giving massive quality of life by automating your Bone Offering and Desecrate.
- Unveil Boots for the 20% increased Movement Speed Cannot be Chilled Boot modifier
- Unveil Gravicius Body Armours for the Life as Extra Maximum Energy Shield.
- Purchase a 5-linked Armour + Energy Shield hybrid Body Armour off the trade site. Use a Screaming Essence of Greed and then craft the Gravicius body armour "
Life as Extra Maximum Energy Shield
" mod.
- Purchase a 5-linked Armour + Energy Shield hybrid Body Armour off the trade site. Use a Screaming Essence of Greed and then craft the Gravicius body armour "
Sell any extra Unveiled Body Armours he drops for ~20 Chaos Orb on league start for others to Unveil too.
IMPORTANT! If you don't obtain the Body Armour Craft, you will need to use a Mana Flask as you won't have enough Energy Shield to properly use Eldritch Battery.
Milestone 2 - Flasks
Flasks are significant defensive upgrades and are your next pickup. The Flask bases are:
- Silver Flask
- Quicksilver Flask
- Granite Flask
- Basalt Flask
- Divine Life Flask
To craft your Flasks, use an Orb of Transmutation on White Flasks and then alternating between using Orb of Alteration and Orb of Augmentation until you hit the following mods on your Silver Flask, Granite Flask and Basalt Flask
- Increased Cast Speed during Flask effect.
- Increased Armour during Flask effect.
- Reduced Effect of Curses on you during Flask effect.
Roll for the following modifiers on your Divine Life Flask. Once you have this modifier, make sure to have captured at least 4 Yellow Beasts. Visit the Menagerie and craft the Sealing mod to give Corrupted Blood and Bleed Removal to your Life Flask.
- 50% of Recovery is Applied Instantly.
- Instant Recovery
- Instant Recovery while on Low Life
Use any Glassblower's Baubles you pick up on your Flasks until they reach 20% Quality. After picking up enough Instilling Orbs check the Crafting Bench and Craft the Enchant Used when Charges Reach Full on each of your Utility Flasks.
Milestone 3 - Wand upgrade
Upgrade your damage by acquiring a Wand with +1 to Level of all Spell Skill Gems that match Absolution's tags. Good extra pickups here are increased Cast Speed on the implicit Wand base, or as a mod on the Wand. Make sure it has an open Suffix for your trigger craft. Search for Wands to purchase using the following trade link
- +1 to Level of all Spell Skill Gems.
- +1 to Level of all Physical Spell Skill Gems.
- +1 to Level of all Lightning Spell Skill Gems
If these are too expensive, you can use the following Vendor recipe to create a Wand:
- A Carved Wand (Can be purchased from act 1 or 2 wand vendor).
- Skill gems with the "Physical" or "Lightning" tag, with Quality totaling 40% or higher.
Sell these components to the Vendor and then with your resulting Wand use an Orb of Augmentation and then a Regal Orb. Finish your Wand off by crafting the "trigger" mod.
Milestone 4 - Boots, Helmet, Ring, and Belt
Work on your Boots, Helmet, Belt and non-Unset Ring trying to get Armor/Energy Shield hybrid bases to make coloring Sockets much easier. Obtain or purchase a Stygian Vise Belt to craft on or use. This allows for an extra Abyss Jewel for damage/Stats/Resistance.
Make sure there is an open prefix to craft the "Cannot be Chilled" and "Movement Speed" Unveiled mod on your Boots AND +1 to maximum number of Skeletons on your Helmet. Get the following mods to fill your build out with as much Life and Resistances as possible through Harvest Reforging, Essence spamming, or through the trades links provided:
- 50+ to Maximum Life
- 30+ Dexterity/Strength
- 35%+ to Fire/Lightning/Cold Resistance.
- 20%+ to Chaos Resistance
IMPORTANT - Get enough Resistances and stats on these few pieces so that you don't have to rely on your Shield. You will be crafting a Life on Block Shield later, and you need to plan to get 0% Resistance from this slot after crafting. NOTE: You need 155 Strength, and at least 111 Dexterity for the Summon Skeletons Mage swap.
Complete this Milestone at the same time as "Milestone 6 Vixen's Entrapment". Get an Unset Ring base and Harvest Reforge Elemental and Life crafts until you hit at least 2, preferably 3 of the following modifiers:
- 30+ Dexterity
- 30+ Strength
- 35%+ Elemental Resistance
- 20%+ Chaos Resistance
Use the following trade link to find an Unset Ring if you cannot Harvest Reforge one. Take the "count" down from 3 -> 2 if there are no cheap ones available with 3 of the good mods.
Milestone 6 - Vixen's Entrapment
Vixen's Entrapment are a pair of Gloves that give an additional Curse and automate that extra Curse without adding an extra button. These need to be purchased only when your Unset Ring is equipped because that is where Assassin's Mark goes.
Milestone 7 - Skill gem amulet
Look for Amulets on Citrine Amulet bases or bases that have enough stats for your needs. If you don't have 155 Strength and 111 Dexterity to level all your Gems, this is the last place to get it. Get the following:
- +1 Level of all Spell/Physical/Lightning Skill Gems
- 50+ Maximum Life
- Strength/Dexterity (depending on how much you have on other gear)
- Resistance (over cap enough to skip resistance on your shield)
Keep an eye out for Amulets that are close to useable but have an open modifier on them for you to craft on stats or Resistance that you're missing. Anoint Testudo on your Amulet using the following Oils at Cassia:
- Clear Oil
- Sepia Oil
- Black Oil
Milestone 8 - Life on block shield
This upgrade is HUGE for survival, and INSTANTLY makes the build feel comfortable.
- Grab ~10 Pristine Fossil and 10 privative resonators. Use them on your Shield Base until you hit the "Recover (3-5)% of Life when you Block" modifier.
- If you also hit a high Life mod with this then GG! Otherwise craft Life even if you need to Orb of Annulment a prefix off.
- If you lack the currency to afford rolling another shield, then save the Orb of Annulment for later when you can afford to roll another.
Milestone 9 - 6-link body armor
Check the prices of the "3 key items" in milestone 10. If you can afford them, skip this milestone. Otherwise purchase a 6-linked Body Armor, use an Screaming Essence of Greed until you hit a 35%+ Resistance roll, and and open Prefix to craft the Gravicius mod on it.
Milestone 10 - "3 Key Items"
It's time to start preparing for the Summon Skeletons swap. As mentioned earlier, you need the "3 key items" to swap.
- Dead Reckoning unique jewel allows Summon Skeletons to summon Mage Skeletons instead of Warrior Skeletons
- Fleshcrafter Unique Chest piece 5-Linked (harvest 5-Link craft, or 150 fusing with the crafting benc). This allows your Minions to ignore Elemental Resistances while they have Energy Shield.
- IMPORTANT: Fleshcrafter converts 2% of your minions Life to Energy Shield PER 1% Chaos Resistance they have. Minions start with 20% Chaos Resistance, so they already convert 40% of their Life to Energy Shield. Anymore Chaos Resistance and your minions will die all the time. DO NOT GIVE MINIONS CHAOS RESISTANCE!
- Rebirth Cluster. Minions created Recently (last 4 secconds) cannot be Damaged. This is how Skeleton Mages retain their Energy Shield at all times. You can buy a base with this link and use 70 alterations on average to hit the mod, or your can just buy one pre rolled with this link.
After obtaining the "3 Key Items" move onto the Skeleton Mage swap. Change your Passive Tree, Skill Gems, and Gear to fully swap to Summon Skeletons. If you need more money to swap Heist some Lockpick Contracts and complete the Chaos Orb recipe, interact with the new League mechanic, or follow our many different money making guides.
Don't feel pressured to swap before you're ready. Once you've completed all the milestones you should be able to complete Red Maps, take on the Shaper/Elder Guardian Invitations and complete your Quest Bosses.
Mid Game Goal
This is where you swap to Summon Skeletons Mages and start playing the "real" build. We'll craft better gear for damage, finish our Flasks and obtain enough damage to clear all the non-Uber bossing content in the game. Once you're done with all the milestones here, you should be able to complete Uber Elder, "The Feared", Guardian Invitations, 60% Delirium maps and start alter farm.
Milestone 1 - The Swap
For the Summon Skeletons swap you need 17 total respec points for your passive tree. You've obtained some from leveling rewards, but you have to use Orb of Regrets for any other respec points you need. Most of your respec points will be used for the Large and Medium Cluster.
For your large cluster obtain any Minion Cluster with any number of Passives. We just need an OK large to start. Check for these mods as long as you can afford them. Even a default Cluster is OK for now since we'll craft one later anyways.
- Added Small Passive Skills also grant: Minions have #% increased Attack and Cast Speed
- Added Small Passive Skills have #% increased Effect
- Added Small Passive Skills also grant: #% to Chaos Resistance
- Added Small Passive Skills also grant: # to Dexterity
- 1 Added Passive Skill is Vicious Bite
- 1 Added Passive Skill is Renewal
- 1 Added Passive Skill is Call to the Slaughter
IMPORTANT Make sure to put your Dead Reckoning jewel in the witch jewel socket next to "Mystic Bulwark"
Milestone 2 - Skill Gem swap
Switch all your skill gems to the new Summon Skeletons Mage setup and buy Level 20 Gems right away if you have the Currency. Refer to the Skill Gem section above and change it to Skeleton Mage swap. It's very important to change this, because you need new Curses and a few different Auras.
IMPORTANT: Skeleton mages have 1 Gem swap you can preform on large bosses (invitations, guardians, and other non-map bosses). Swap your Greater Multiple Projectiles Support for Hypothermia Support to have your Skeletons shoot many fewer, but stronger projectiles.
ALSO Swap Greater Multiple Projectiles Support for Volley Support depending on which map layouts you're farming. GMP is great for open layout maps like Tropical Island Map and Mesa Map but Volley Support is great for closed corridor maps like Crimson Temple Map and Toxic Sewer Map.
Milestone 2 - Good Summoner Jewels
There are a few good Summoner Jewel options you should use to increase your Mages damage.
- Quickening Covenant
- Cast speed on our Summon Skeletons is very good for damage.
- Fortress Covenant
- A second option once you’ve obtained Quickening, but it’s more expensive.
- Rare Ghastly Eye Jewel off the trade site with these mods
- We go for increased Minion Cast Speed, increased minion damage if you've used a Minion Skill Recently and Added Flat damage. Get at least 2 desirable mods, but 3 is ideal.
IMPORTANT!!! - Place Covenant jewels ONLY in Cluster Jewel Sockets to negate the downsides ("Minions have 25% Reduced Movement Speed" and "Minions take 20% increased Damage")
Milestone 3 - +1 Maximum skeleton amulet
We need a new Amulet to give us +1 to Level of all Spell Skill Gems, or +1 to maximum number of Skeletons These are both fairly equal in how much damage they provide so pick up any Amulet with the stats you need, and Life or an open Prefix to craft Life .
Once you have a decent Amulet Anoint Death Attunement then unspec the nodes leading up to it and the node itself from your Passive Tree.
- Clear Oil
- Crimson Oil
- Silver Oil
Milestone 3 - 21 Vaal Summon Skeleton
A level 21 Vaal Summon Skeletons with 0% Quality is the cheapest and easiest damage upgrade you can afford pretty early on into the League because of the Divination card The Bones. You can obtain the level 21 gem off the trade site, or by turning in 6 of The Bones. Do not pay more than 100c for this.
Milestone 3 - REAL Flask setup
Flasks are an extremely important part of our builds defence so properly invest into them. You need these 2 mods on 2 Flasks.
- %increased Armor during Flask Effect
- %reduced Effect of Curses During Flask Effect
Use the Flasks below, fitting the above mods onto 2 of them where available. Buy or roll Flasks for the mod Gain 5-7 Charges when you are Hit by an Enemy. Grab item level 80 Utility Flask bases, rolling 5-7 Charges when you are Hit by an Enemy should take about 30 Orb of Alteration each Flask for 120 total. You also want to get %increased Armor during Flask Effect and %reduced Effect of Curses During Flask Effect. Either Orb of Augmentation into those, or buy those mods on at least one if you have to.
- Granite Flask
- Basalt Flask
- Quicksilver Flask
- Divine Life Flask
- Taste of Hate
- We use Taste of Hate for mitigation. 15% of Physical Damage from Hits taken as Cold Damage during Flask effect is very powerful and makes our Armour work better against Physical hits since 15% of the hit is reduced by our Resistances.
Go to your crafting bench and craft Used when Charges reach full on your 4 Utility Flasks to automate their use. This will cost you 5 Instilling Orb and Glassblower's Bauble each.
Milestone 4 - Brittle Boots
Brittle Boots are a huge source of extra damage. Brittle is an alternate cold ailment that gives base critical strike chance against enemies. Base critical strike chance is then scaled with increased Critical Strike Chance, so it's very important to combine the Power Charge Critical Strike Chance our Minions have with extra base Critical Strike Chance from this Brittle mod.
These Boots drop Brittle Ground, which is a small circle where any enemy on top will have 5% Brittle effect on them, giving 5% base Critical Strike Chance against that enemy. You need to walk onto the boss to drop your Brittle ground, but later on we'll make an Animate Guardian with these Boots too helping maintain the debuff.
You can obtain these Boots 2 ways
- Buy a base off trade with this link and craft on those Boots with Harvest Reforging or Essence spamming.
- Buy a pair of really good Boots (3 good suffixes + movement speed + life), and use Greater Eldritch Ember on that pair of Boots until you hit:
- Drops Brittle Ground while moving, lasting 3-4 seconds
- While a Unique Enemy is in your Presence, Drops Brittle Ground while moving, lasting 6-7 seconds
Milestone 3 - 6-Link Fleshcrafter
A 6-linked Fleshcrafter is a HUGE damage upgrade you can buy for a reasonable price even early on into the league. You can go about getting your 6-Link in 3 ways:
- Spending 1500 Orb of Fusing at the crafting bench for the Six Linked craft
- Buying a 6-Linked base off of trade
- Getting a Harvest 6-Link craft
You shouldn't spam Orb of Fusing on your chest. I know a guy who spent 40 Exalted Orb in Orb of Fusing trying to link his first chest.
Milestone 5 - Animate Guardian
Don't be afraid to create your Animate Guardian. He will not die once you obtain Garb of the Ephemeral, Mask of the Stitched Demon and Kingmaker with a level 21 Animate Guardian gem.
The only time my Animate Guardian died was during Uber Sirus and Uber Maven, so take your Animate Guardian Gem out of your Sockets during those fights. Don't worry! The Animate Guardian gear is tied to your character, so when you Socket it back in and "use" the Gem he respawns with all his gear equipped.
- Purchase a level 21 Animate Guardian to give it extra Life from additional gem levels.
- Obtain Garb of the Ephemeral
- Don't get Chaos Resistance on your Animate Guardian Gloves, Boots, or Helmet.
- Give your Animate Guardian at least 25% Elemental Resistance (Cold, Fire, and Lightning) through your Gloves, Boots, or Helmet you provide him. This is easy to obtain by using Screaming Essence of Hatred, Screaming Essence of Anger, or Screaming Essence of Wrath.
- Purchase a Kingmaker axe.
- Obtain a pair of gloves like these. If you can't buy these at a reasonable price (~50c) then you can always skip the unnerve mod and obtain some resistance on the glove slot until you have more money.
- Boots are HUGE. Obtain the brittle mod on Boots just like before. This will further increase our Brittle debuff uptime, giving our Mages a huge boost in Critical Strike Chance.
- Purchase Garb of the Ephemeral.
Milestone 6 - Wand Crafting
Craft your own Wand on a Convoking Wand base going for +1 to Level of all Spell Skill Gems, +1 to Level of all Minion Skill Gems and an open Suffix to craft Trigger a Socketed Spell when you Use a Skill. Use Metallic Fossil, Corroded Fossil, Jagged Fossil, Shuddering Fossil and Prime Resonators to give the greatest chance of hitting both mods (1/12 avg). This typically costs 500-600 Chaos Orb depending on your luck and the price of Fossils/Resonators.
Once you have the +1 to Level of all Spell Skill Gems and +1 to Level of all Minion Skill Gems base craft Trigger a Socketed Spell when you Use a Skill and call it a day....Unless you have a bit more currency to spend. Get a bit spicy and with a little luck you'll have a really nice Wand or at least a base to sell to another player to try and craft another.
Advanced Wand Crafting
Milestone 7 - Cluster Crafting
One of the last things to upgrade for more damage is going to be your Large and Medium cluster jewel. Your Medium is easy, if you already have Rebirth Cluster your Medium is done! Your Large cluster will take a bit more work though.
- Buy a 8-12 Passive Large Cluster (higher is better but they can be more expensive) of at least item level 75, but the best is ilvl 84. Harvest Reforge Attack, Caster, or Critical until you obtain Added Small Passive Skills also grant: Minions have #% increased Attack and Cast Speed, and a Notable that isn't Skeletal Atrophy, Rotten Claws, or Primordial Bond as these are all useless.
- Buy a decent cluster off the trade site with this link. Obtain a few good modifiers on any Passive number. Adjust this trade link to find more good mods by increasing the "count" from 2 -> 3 or 2 -> 4, and by changing the number of small passives from 8 -> 12
- The last method is for a really good Cluster Jewel. Start with a 12 passive ilvl 84 base. Orb of Alteration spam for Added Small Passive Skills have 35% increased Effect, or Added Small Passive Skills also grant: Minions have 3% increased Attack and Cast Speed. Orb of Augmentation see if you hit Small Passive Skills have 35% increased Effect with Added Small Passive Skills also grant: Minions have 3% increased Attack and Cast Speed. Use a Regal Orb if you didn't hit both mods. If you hit an additional good prefix (minion damage notables, T1 Maximum Life, or T1 Energy Shield) and the Added Small Passive Skills have 35% increased Effect + the Added Small Passive Skills also grant: Minions have 3% increased Attack and Cast Speed and you have a Suffix open, Harvest Augment a Critical mod forcing Vicious Bite. Augmenting a critical mod is incredibly expensive, and should only be done on a near perfect base.
Milestone 8 - Enduring Composure
Buy a Small Armour Cluster with 2 passives and the notable Enduring Composure. Alternatively you can buy a Small 2 Passive Armour Cluster and Harvest Reforge Defense until you hit that mod. This cluster gives us Endurance Charge generation which provides up to 12% Physical Damage Reduction.
Milestone 8 - Eldritch mods
This is the last thing to do to your gear, and I've saved it for last in the hopes you've picked up some good pieces of gear. You have the option of further investing into your Helmet, Gloves, and Boots (slightly).
Only invest into your gear further if it has 3 T3+ Suffixes that are good, like Elemental/Chaos Resistance or Strength/Dexterity. All Suffixes should be useful before further investment.
- Gloves:
- Lesser Eldritch Ember for %increased Minion Damage
- Helmet:
- Lesser Eldritch Ember for %increased Cast Speed
- Lesser Eldritch Ichor for 6% of Physical Damage from Hits taken as Fire Damage
- Boots:
- Use Greater Eldritch Ember to roll While a Unique Enemy is in your Presence, Drops Brittle Ground while moving, lasting # seconds or the generic Drops Brittle Ground while moving, lasting 4 seconds.
End Game Goal
This is where the build really shines. Take full advantage of how much Skeleton Mages pump damage to invest heavily into defence. Once done with this gear set I guarantee you'll be able to complete all the Uber bosses and very comfortably farm whatever content you want. 90% Maximum Elemental Resistance, Spell Suppression, 62/75 Attack and Spell Block, 60k Armour, and Aegis Aurora replenishing our Energy Shield.
End Game Goal
Your goal is to obtain 100% Suppression, 90% Maximum Resistance, and Aegis Aurora. This is going to take some really good and pricy pieces of gear. Every gear slot will cost 3+ Exalted Orbs, because we need T2 Resistances and T1 Suppression filling our Suffixes. What makes our Resistance needs so strong is the unique jewel Melding of the Flesh. It gives -70% to all Elemental Resistances, but allows you to only need to cap one Maximum Resistance to 90% (Cold Resistance) to also raise your other Resistances to 90% (Fire and Lightning).
IMPORTANT: Remember that the recommended gear depends on what Stats you still need after acquiring different pieces!. EX: You get Dexterity on your Boots, so your Amulet doesn't need Dexterity. Now that you don't need Dexterity on your Amulet you can get a high Elemental Resistance
Buy upgrades and milestones, even if you can't equip them right away. The gearing is so tight you'll have to equip everything all at once when your purchasing and crafting is complete, and when you've leveled up to at least 96. Most milestones here are to be completed at the same time.
Milestone 1 - Awakened And Alternative Quality Gems
One of the last upgrades you can make before the full gear swap is going to be purchasing Awakened Gems and level 21 Gems to squeeze out every last bit of damage, survival, and utility we can. Here is a list of the Gems to buy Awakened and at level 21:
- Awakened Spell Echo Support - The double damage works with the skeleton mages repeated casts
- Awakened Minion Damage Support - Level 5 of this gem gives +1 to Level of Supported Minion Skill Gems which is HUGE
- Level 21 Raise Spectre - Once this Gem becomes level 25 you unlock an extra Spectre to summon. Now your Spectres will be 2x Host Chieftain, and Carnage Chieftain.
- Level 21 Purity of Ice (for later) and Determination. Levels are very important on these gems so that you can obtain the full 90% Maximum Resistance, and 50k+ Armour
- All other Gems need to be Level 20, with 20 Quality. 20% Quality adds a lot of damage to this build, even gems you wouldn't think would do much.
Milestone 2 - +2 Duration fleshcrafter
You can complete this without swapping your gear out, and it provides ~25% more damage. This goes for ~20 exalts, so only purchase this if you have a lot of currency and don't mind delaying the defence upgrades.
Milestone 3 - Aegis Aurora
Aegis Aurora is a shield that provides incredible recovery, extra Attack Block, and extra Maximum Cold Resistance on top. This Shield is perfect for a more defensive setup, since the 2% of 50-60k Armour is going to be higher than 5% of our Life, so it beats the recovery out over Life on Block. The extra 5% Maximum Cold Resistance pairs perfectly with our Melding setup letting us use Purity of Ice and a few extra sources we'll talk about later, to hit 90% Maximum Elemental Resistance.
Some good corruptions to eventually get are:
- Physical Taken as Elemental Damage
- +(4-5)% Chance to Block
- Reduced Extra Critical Strike Damage
- Grants Level 23 Determination
Milestone 4 - THE GEAR
This is where I'm going to get very general with my gearing advice, and give a few tips on how to make the gearing much easier.
- You NEED tier 1 suppression rolls on your helmet, gloves, and boots. DON'T settle for T2 rolls, it's very important we hit 100% suppression chance for the Uber bosses.
- Suffixes are the most important part of your gear. Use a few tricks to get decent enough Life rolls so you can only purchase the Suffixes.
- For Eldritch Influenced gear, you can Eldritch Chaos Orb or Eldritch Exalted Orb/Eldritch Orb of Annulment (making sure to read how these work properly). These will target re-roll your Prefixes, but keep your Suffixes untouched, so you can get 50+ Life without much hassle.
- For Rings, craft Suffixes Cannot Be Changed (Harvest Reforging Keeping Suffixes if your Prefixes are too full to craft). Then Veiled Chaos Orb, craft Mana to block that Unveil. Unveil into Maximum Life. This works most of the time, but sometimes you'll get unlucky and have to craft again. This lets you easily get Life, and an open craft for Non-Channelling Skills have -(7-6) to Total Mana Cost on your Rings too.
- Suffixes are the most important part of your gear. Use a few tricks to get decent enough Life rolls so you can only purchase the Suffixes.
- Helmet, Gloves, Boots, and Rings NEED their suffixes full with T1-2 resistances.
- This means T1 suppression, and 2x Tier 1-2 resistances for Gloves, Boots, Helmet.
- Your Gloves need to have an open Prefix to craft +1 to Level of Socketed AoE Gems, to add a Level to all your Aura's.
- Your Helmet, Gloves and Boots also need to have Evasion Rating on them for the Suppression mastery to give an extra 10% chance.
- Get 155 total Dexterity on your Amulet and another piece OR de-level your sniper's mark as much as you need making your Dexterity needs go from 155 -> 111 total
- Don't worry about which Elemental Resistances you get on your gear, because you can always Resistance swap with Harvest to another without losing the roll’s tier.
- You need 2 pieces of gear with 25%+ Chaos Resistance on them to reach 75% Chaos Resistance with your Belt.
- Prismatic Catalyst your Rings and Belt to help squeeze as much Resistance out as possible.
- With enough levels you can pick up another Jewel Socket and put a Rare Jewel in with Fire/Cold/Lightning Resistance, and a "Fire and Cold Resistance" roll to give you 25%+ to one Resistance and 12% to another.
Milestone 5 - Belt crafting
Your belt is where you'll obtain a lot of your Chaos Resistance for the build. It also can provide some Stats or Elemental Resistance.
Stygian Vise Guide
Milestone 6 - Impossible escape
Impossible Escape is a Jewel which allows you to allocate Passive Tree points within a circle of the Keystone you've obtained. We'll use this to get 3% maximum Cold Resistance from within the radius of the Keystone Unwavering Stance.
Milestone 7 - How to get 90% maximum resistances
- 5% maximum Cold Resistance from Aegis Aurora.
- 3% maximum Cold Resistance from our step 6 Impossible Escape .
- 7% maximum Cold Resistance a level 23 Purity of Ice.
- Level 21 Gems, +1 level from "AOE" Level craft on Gloves, +1 Level from our Wand.
- Melding of the Flesh makes your 90% maximum Cold Resistance also apply to Lighting and Fire as well, so now you have 90% maximum Resistance against all elements.
Milestone 8 - How to get 100% spell suppression
- 22% on your Helmet
- 22% on your Gloves, and a 6% implicit from spamming Lesser Eldritch Ichor.
- 22% from your Boots.
- 28% from the Instinct wheel and the 10% suppression mastery if you're Gloves, Boots, and Helmet have Evasion Rating.
You can technically get T2 on ONE piece of gear, but you'll then need to upgrade your Glove Suppression Implicit.
Milestone 9 - Watcher's eye
Watcher's Eyes depend on what mods are available, but in general pick one mod and then obtain an extra from a pool of 2nd choice mods. Our first choice mod would be
- % of Physical Damage from Hits taken as Cold Damage while affected by Purity of Ice
- % of Physical Damage from Hits taken as Cold Damage while affected by Purity of Elements
- % of Physical Damage from Hits taken as Fire Damage while affected by Purity of Elements
- % of Physical Damage from Hits taken as Lightning Damage while affected by Purity of Elements
With the pool of 2nd choice mods being
- % additional Physical Damage Reduction while affected by Determination
- #+ to Armour while affected by Determination
- % Chance to Block Attack Damage while affected by Determination
Milestone 10 - Eldritch influences
Once your gear is all crafted (including any Eldritch Chaos Orbing you need to do for Life, or to open up a Movement Speed craft) it's time to roll your Implicits.
- Helmet:
- You need 9% increased Mana Reservation efficiency which is 2 upgrades off the Lesser Eldritch Ichor. Roll it with Lesser Eldritch Ichor. Then use an Exceptional Eldritch Ember to add a random high level Exarch mod. Use 2 Orb of Conflict, which have a higher chance of upgrading lower level mods and downgrading higher level mods.
- The 2nd mod is increased Cast Speed rolled with Lesser Eldritch Ember once you've obtained your 9% increased Mana Reservation Efficiency already.
- Boots:
- Brittle ground is mandatory, but should be rolled with Greater Eldritch Ember so there is a chance to obtain the While a Unique enemy is in your presence version which has a higher base duration than the normal one.
- The Eater of Worlds Implicit will be rolled with Lesser Eldritch Ichor for %increased Life regeneration rate.
- Gloves
- Minions deal %increased damage rolled with Lesser Eldritch Ember.
- %chance to Suppress Spell damage should be rolled with Lesser Eldritch Ichor. If you have a T2 suppression roll on your gear, you can still hit 100% suppression chance by upgrading these mod for the last few percent.
Milestone 11 - Mana reservation efficiency
This build has very tight mana without a level 4 enlighten. To use a level 3 enlighten you need
- A jewel corrupted with 2% increased Reservation Efficiency (dead reckoning is cheap later into the league) otherwise grab a random abyss jewel corrupted with it
- 9% increased Mana Reservation Efficiency on your helmet from milestone 6
- Both Aura wheels and the mastery for 15% increased Mana Reservation Efficiency
- Elreon's jewelry Unveiled craft for Non-Channeling Skills have -(7-6) to Total Mana Cost.
Now that you've completed all the milestones, import your gear into Path of Building to make sure your Resistances are capped, and that your Spell Suppression/Mana are figured out too. Copy items into POB easily by ctrl-c the item in game, and ctrl-v it into POB's "item" section. Import your character's tree and gems too, so you can be sure everything is figured out before you start changing your gear and Passive Tree.
If you've checked it over and have made the swap, you are ready to tackle some of the hardest bossing content Path of Exile has to offer. Good luck and have fun out there Exiles!

Summary
When you start this build you must play Absolution until getting the "3 key items", but after completing this guide you will be ready to slay all the Uber bosses in the game and farm any bossing content with Summon Skeletons Mages. You can take this completed build into nearly all the content in the game, letting your Summon Skeletons do all the work while you easily relax and pick up the loot afterwards.
